NYT Exposes Kean Swiftboat Plans

by: Juan Melli

Fri Jun 30, 2006 at 01:04:50 AM EDT

Today the New York Times reveals that the Kean Jr campaign is self-funding a swiftboat-style smear campaign against Senator Menendez. These repeatedly discredited lies are so sleazy that nobody else - not the RNC, RSCC, or any independent groups - are willing to fund them, so the campaign has to do it themselves. It's too dirty even for Karl Rove, but as they say, Tom Kean Jr personally approved this message. The New York Times pulls back the curtains (emphasis mine):
The Republican candidate for Senate in New Jersey, Thomas Kean Jr., intends to make a campaign film that accuses his Democratic opponent, Robert Menendez, of "being wrapped up in the rackets for 30 years" despite public records and statements by former federal prosecutors that contradict Mr. Kean's most serious charges.

Mr. Kean's chief campaign consultant, Matt Leonardo, a strategist for Republican candidates, disclosed the plans in an interview and said the film would be "very similar" in purpose to the commercials used to attack the military record of John Kerry during the 2004 presidential race.

Both the New York Times and the Star Ledger recently exposed the Kean Jr campaign as a bunch of liars, but they're going to keep digging themselves in the hole anyway.
Mr. Kean's charges are not, however, supported by the public record and were repudiated by independent authorities including the four assistant United States attorneys who prosecuted Union City officials of that era for racketeering and corruption. There is no truth, those former officials say, to the Kean campaign's charge that Mr. Menendez made a deal to keep himself out of prison.
....
Mr. Leonardo did not directly dispute that information, published Sunday in The New York Times and The Star Ledger of Newark, but described it as a "set of views" and said other people held different views.
The only "different" view you can have from the truth is a lie. To be fair, there is one big difference between this smear campaign and the attacks on John Kerry:
Both he and Ms. Hazelbaker said that the source — campaign money as opposed to a 527 committee — was the primary distinction between the Swift boat commercials and the planned film on Mr. Menendez.
You read that correctly - they seem to be proud of the fact that the campaign is directly funding this. I've always assumed that Kean Jr wasn't really in this to win, but rather to set himself up for a future race. The way the campaign has been completely mismanaged, it's hard to conclude otherwise - but this latest news seals the deal. Nobody serious about winning would hold on to such wildly incompetent campaign staff. A broken magic 8 ball could be more effective.

What Junior might not realize it that it's his indifference to this idiocy that will doom his future prospects, too. What began as his only asset - the Kean family name - is being eviscerated by his immature, selfish ambitions. One of the largest newspapers in the country has exposed him as a liar, but he stubbornly pushes forward with his sleazy lies. If he hasn't already, his actions will ruin the chances of any future political ambitions he may have. The formerly respected "Kean" name will become a burden on the rest of his career and nothing but a shameful legacy to future generations.

A sad campaign gets sadder (4.00 / 1)
This ought to put a swift end to whatever remains of the notion that the Kean name stands for something. How sad for a once proud family that their scion would sink to this type of smear.

a national dem awakening? (0.00 / 0)
it looks like, although it wasn't handled as well as it should have been during the prez campaign, dems across the country may have actually learned a political lesson for a change. from webb to lamont to tester to menendez, swiftboating is being met with stong responses. what we've learned is that a fast, unbending response not only shows how slimy your opponent is, but it also gives the swiftboatee the abilty to prove how tough they are while remaining "above the fray".

Thanks. (4.00 / 2)
On behalf of the campaign, I've got to say we appreciate the support. The Republicans have been using these smear, sleaze, and slime tactics far too long. Now way are we going to stand for it anymore, especially not here in Jersey.

my pleasure. (0.00 / 0)
the challenge at hand is obviously to get the current batch of smearers and slimers replaced with decent, honest civil servants. (which, by the way, is why that recent nyt story about senator menendez was so great. not only did it make kean's operation look sleazy, but it reminded folks that menendez stood up at a difficult time.)

the next, and possibly more difficult, challenge will be to push just as hard and dig just as deep to keep those we currently support honest. as unfair as it sounds, we should be even more vigilant about monitoring "our side" than we are of theirs.

keep up the good fight!

The Best Defense is a Kick Ass Offense. (0.00 / 0)

No BS swift boating can stand up to the TRUTH of what Kean has supported...and would continue to support if he ever became a Senator.  Yes, rebut the crap....but then go on the attack.  This fool is so vulnerable it's almost absurd.

Yes, Bob must defend himself...but each defense of BS MUST be accompanied by a serious attack based on reality!!!

Two ways to knock the ball out of the park:

Bob should take the lead and be on the front edge of the blade that cuts all the corruption (legalized and otherwise) out of federal, state, and local politics.

Why not put forth an across the board detailed/specific legislative agenda for all three branches.  There are many pro-reform groups that would be tickled pink to provide sample legislation.

Another Home Run:

Given that the President has never been called to account in ANY serious way by the Republican congress as there have NEVER been any serious oversight hearings on how he has conned/lied us into this insane invasion/occupation of Iraq I also suggest  Bob pounds that issue home with great intensity.

Most Americans know in their gut that Iraq is a corrupt war that is fed by the pressure to keep the Halliburton's fat and happy.  Let's challenge Kean to come down on the obvious war profiteering that Bush and his party have allowed to flourish.

The corruption of the Bush administration makes anything going on anywhere else in America look like penny ante stuff...and in the case of Bush it's not just dirt but BLOOD that's on his hands.

How dare Kean support Bush's dirty corrupt war!!!  That's the REAL issue in this Senatorial campaign!!!

Meanwhile, the Taliban are making a comeback...thanks to the Bush/Kean policies.  Imagine the difference if half of what we've wasted in Iraq was put into really cleaning up Afghanistan...and making it a model of real justice and real democracy!!!  As it is we have messed up BOTH countries; and made more people hate the whole of the United Sates for the incompetence and corruption of the Bush/Kean agenda.

Here's a bit more on Bush's folly...which Kean supports.

Borken Magic 8 Ball... (0.00 / 0)
HAH!

Magic 8 Ball, will I Tom Kean Jr. win the Senate Campaign?

All signs point to Yes No Maybe So!

Media In Trouble

It all depends upon how the press chooses to play it. (0.00 / 0)
When John Kerry was Swiftboated, the press chose to give "equal time" to both sides, as though the lies of the Swiftboaters were entitled to the same degree of deference as Kerry's documented military record.  What must be fought here - and in any such instance - is any tendency on the part of the press to treat this as a legitimate controversy with two equally valid sides, rather than the unsubstantiated and malicious smear that it is.  It's good to see the press getting out front of the story so far, taking care to point out that nothing from the Kean camp is supported either in the public record nor by the prosecutors who ran the Musto investigation.  Let's make sure they continue to report fairly.

A rose is a rose. (4.00 / 1)
Libel is the name for public misrepresentation of facts.

Painting them as "views" is not going to change this.

This is libel my friends, to the extent that the material is factually inaccurate.

Can you say "law suit"?

Does this mean (0.00 / 0)
Ku Klux Karl is running the Kean Kampaign Kommittee. Ann D. KKKoulter speaks for all Republicans. Make them deny it.
To which of the two major political parties is the Klan most closely aligned?  And when can we label him Ku Klux Kean?
The gloves are off and any moran who sides with KKKarl needs to be sucker punched at every turn. The Star-Ledger must be put on notice that giving rumor and innuendo the same credence as facts on the record is stooping to Pox (deliberate typo) News propaganda levels. This is New Jersey, not Alabama.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
