Blue Jersey Aims High, Needs Your Help

by: Juan Melli

Thu Nov 16, 2006 at 12:56:08 AM EST

In a perfect world, truth would be free. You could turn on your TV or open your newspaper and the truth of whatever issue being discussed would leap out at you. You'd have in-depth reporting that is honest about any ideological leanings or personal biases from the reporter. The most important issues would be covered first and foremost and most often.

In case you didn't realize it - the world isn't perfect. The news that you pay for is too often shallow, directed at some other market, or simply infected with personal or ideological biases to the point where it is useless. You pay for the newspaper. You pay for cable TV. You pay and pay and pay and you have absolutely no say in what they do.

Except here at Blue Jersey. Our front-pagers devote a lot of time and effort to bring you news and opinions that are fresh, honest, and timely. If you don't agree with them, you can say so. You can even take the time to write a diary that proves them wrong, if you want.

In it's short year of existence, Blue Jersey has transformed into an active community of over 1000 registered users and 100,000 page views per month. We helped raise nearly $10,000 for our Congressional candidates this year and brought you original podcast interviews of Senator Bob Menendez,  Congressmen Rob Andrews, Steve Rothman, Frank Pallone, Rush Holt, DFA Chairman Jim Dean, several state legislators and others. We caught Tom Kean Jr's campaign astroturfing on our site, generated tons of media coverage and put them on the defensive.

Earlier this month we learned that Blue Jersey will be awarded the 2007 Lieutenant Laurel Hester Prize for Citizen Courage "for being a national model in how a blog can become an unstoppable engine to move society toward equality for all." Steven Goldstein, chair of Garden State Equality, explained:

Blue Jersey played a leading role in fighting on behalf of Lt. Hester, Lily McBeth and most recently, "Cher," partnering with Garden State Equality to make their stories known in every home in New Jersey.  In each case, justice ultimately prevailed.
State and national press have taken notice of what we're doing - including the Associated Press, New York Times, ABC7, MSNBC, Star Ledger, The Record, Trenton Times, Montclair Times, The Beacon, and others. Political insiders and elected officials read us on a regular basis. Congressman Rothman has said that "Blue Jersey is an extremely valuable resource for all those who care about a progressive view of local, state, and national issues. Its New Jersey perspective and edge make it even more important and fun to read."

And all of this has come to you for no cost. In a perfect world, it would continue like that forever.

But it isn't a perfect world.

We aren't going to require people to pay for access to this site - we aren't the New York Times, after all. Our entire point in doing this is to put the truth in the minds of as many people as possible and then let them decide how to use it. You can't do that if you charge admission. But we do need money to pay the bills around here. If Blue Jersey is to continue growing, we need to ensure that it's properly funded. If you agree that we're performing an important service, we need your support. Everyone (rightly) contributes to campaigns which ultimately end and leave little infrastructure for the future. But if you believe in building the permanent progressive infrastructure in New Jersey, we need your support. Like NPR which relies on its listeners to keep going, Blue Jersey depends on you - our community.

It's very simple. If you like what we are doing; then show us by helping us keep doing it - give us a little bit of that folding money in your wallet or handbag, write a diary, and leave a few comments. If you don't like what we are doing; then give us lots of money and maybe we'll sell out and change what we are doing (we won't really, but we will take your money, tell you that we are selling out, and thank you for it!).

What does your money buy, if you send it? Besides some other exciting projects we'll be announcing soon, it buys time. Our writers' time. One thing we hardly ever mention to you is the enormous committment of time this blog requires of its writer/editors.

This eases the strain on some very good people, who work hard to bring this blog to you, and to engage with you in it every day.

If 30 of you each give $100, we can reach our goal of $3,000. We don't have any sappy gifts like NPR, but your gift will be appreciated. We promise to put it to good use and to keep doing what we do best - bringing you political news and opinion about topics important to New Jersey with a side-helping of snark.

Any reason that the payment requires a shipping address?

fixed (0.00 / 0)
it should no longer ask for a shipping address. Thanks for the heads up.

I will absolutely sell out. For $200, I will handicap your '08 Senate bid. (Guess what? You're gonna win! Now send more money!)

T-shirts (0.00 / 0)
What about another run of t-shirts? That could help raise money, especially with a nice markup.

t-shirts (0.00 / 0)
We may do that again, but it's pretty time-consuming. After the initial few days, the purchases become more sporadic. Packaging the order and then making a separate trip to the post office every time just to mail out one shirt becomes very inefficient, especially for those of us who have jobs. We're trying to find a company that automates that process for us, but so far we haven't found a good one.

cafe press (0.00 / 0)
If you sell your t-shirts there, don't they take care of all of the production and shipping?

I imagine that they also take a cut of the profits, but all that means is that you will have to charge more for your t-shirts.  I don't remember what you charged the first time that you sold Blue Jersey t-shirts, but I can't imagine that people would mind paying $5 or $10 more, knowing that the money goes to a good cause.

two problems (0.00 / 0)
the big one is cafepress doesn't sell Blue Shirts. Last time I checked, they do white and black only. The second is they take a HUGE cut of the profit. The price would have to be set pretty high - much higher than we had them - to generate any useful amount of revenue.

GoodStorm (0.00 / 0)
Check out GoodStorm. The only downside is, according to their tutorial video, they don't have dark blue shirts. I would think you'd be able to set something up by contacting them, though.

We've actually had a store there for a while, but as you said, they didn't have dark blue shirts. It appears they're now offering union-made navy blue shirts, so we're going to look into that now. Thanks.

Pre -order? (0.00 / 0)

If you decide to go the t-shirt route, could you ask people to pre-order them?  That way you will know how many to have made and can make one trip (hopefully with a truck) to the PO.

I'd even buy one for my sister, who lives in Rodney country.

And I hate Cafe Press!

Why can't I get on the comments section of "Why We Lost"?
My 'puter or your server?

pre-order (0.00 / 0)
We did a pre-order last time that worked great, but we also ordered some extra. The problem is with the extra shirts, and we know there are people out there who want to place an order but don't hear about it in time to pre-order.

The comments in the "Why We Lost" thread have been temporarily disabled. Nothing has been deleted, but I cut off comments to the thread because it's degenerating into unproductive name-calling and attacks. They will reappear in a few days.

[ Parent ]
The issue (4.00 / 1)
While everybody likes t-shirts, what this thread is talking about is beyond that.

Everybody's planning their race for 2008 and improvements for next time around. But they're not placing much value on something thought of as a given.

Something like Blue Jersey. It might not occur to you, but Blue Jersey will not be around by the 2008 cycle if its readers and other supporters don't step up. That's not a threat -- just something I doubt we often think about.

Unlike the other big sites, Blue Jersey doesn't have full time employees -- just volunteers who care. And the people volunteering aren't ex-movie producers who can afford to blog all day, Jane Hamsher!!! (shakes fist at Connecticut)

Anyway, for a community of people that are constantly devoting themselves, their money, and their time to worthy causes, this is one.

So while you're thinking about what you can do for candidates in 2007/08, please think of Blue Jersey first.

JRB (0.00 / 0)
You are correct.  And I will kick in my miniscule amount of money after I pay the rent.

BlueJersey beats Times Select any day. I can usually find Krugman and Herbert elsewhere. And Tierny, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

But I want a t-shirt dammit!

Ok - I just made that up.

(But, if someone gives $1,000, I'm sure we can arrange something fun and commemorative.)

Hey jmelli!  I'm a newbie at Blue Jersey and am happy to make a contribution.  Thanks so much for what you all do here.

n.b.:  Also as a new kid, I have been too embarrased to ask if the T-shirt was real and how to get one.  Sooooooo glad to hear that they exist!  I want to sign up for those too!  Do remember the linebackers among us. LOL.

please re-open comments (0.00 / 0)
While the conversation has been heated between myself and some of the other participants at times, I don't believe that I or any of the others who have participated in this conversation have degenerated into name calling or personal attacks.

I think that an analysis of our state's shortcomings, especially with regards to our Democratic leadership, in 2006 is healthy and necessary and I for one welcome the participation of those who have already spoken as well as Smarty and anyone else who wants to offer their input.

the comments will be re-opened soon, but not today. It's a fruitless distraction. That's not negotiable.

Fruitless distraction? "not negotiable"? (3.00 / 1)

Excuse me ... I was under the impression that this was the place to discuss progressive politics.  Any discussion has many different views.

I wasn't aware that we're only going to allow "certain" views here.  Maybe we should be clear about which views are "acceptable."  I was actually starting to think about how much money I was going contribute, when I saw your post.  I would request that you reconsider this policy of arbitrary restrictions.

censorship (4.00 / 1)
I'm sorry you feel that way. This site isn't a free-for-all. There are blogs out there with no control whatsoever (I won't name names because they're mostly run by people I respect) and in the end the discussions degrade into pissing matches.

We'd like to avoid that so we have a series of rules in place which I don't consider to be arbitrary. The purpose is to keep the dialog both civil and productive. There's no list of rules long enough to encompass all scenarios to cover that, but that's how things are enforced.

It has nothing to do with certain views or opinions being silenced. It's about the tone and constructiveness of the discussion. If it looks like censorship, it's because I guess it is censorship. But I want to be clear - I'm not censoring based on views, it's with the intention of maintaining order and civility.

[ Parent ]
Censorship on Tone (0.00 / 0)

If you're censoring on tone, that sounds like a reasonable criteria.  But then I have to ask whether that criteria is being fairly applied.  It would appear that the blog was closed because it was criticizing current Democratic leadership in the state.  Pretty sharp criticism, but fair.  The only tone problem I noticed last nite was in the attacks by one of the "staff writers" of bluejersey.

censorship (0.00 / 0)
I still haven't even read that blog post. To be honest I usually ignore that author's posts because they're too long for me. But to each his own. The content of it is irrelevant to me. I was concerned with what's happening in the comments and as you say, the "staff writers" are not guilt free on this one. No disagreements there.

If I wanted to remove criticisms of the Democratic party, I could have easily deleted the blog post. I did not. All I did was suspend the comments. Unfortunately, when I do that, it makes them all disappear until I re-enable them. I have no control over that. If I did, they would still be visible, but it's not an option.

I really don't mind if people criticize the Democratic leadership of the state. They don't control this blog or me. I have plenty of criticism of my own in store for what they did this past election because I don't want to see this year's mistakes repeated in the future. I'll be posting on it in the coming weeks.

I got no dog (0.00 / 0)
in this fight. (I learned that phrase from the Internets.)

I would like to see healthy debate about the furure of NJ.  I do hate the back and forth, because as J has noted, its fruitless.

You people should have endured the progressive site I used to blog at. (I was a virgin then.) Racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., in the guise of South Park. Aside from politics, I've had more than a few dust ups there.  Needless to say, I left.

Youse guys are - um - refreshingly civilized.

So, let's go back to the debate.
