Menendez Not Supporting Filibuster. Yet.

by: Kire

Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 09:10:21 AM EST

(Egg on my face. This is the self-correcting blogosphere at work. Keep calling! Update: Senator Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) will be voting against Alito. - promoted by jmelli)

In a previous diary, jmelli claimed that Menendez is supporting the filibuster, citing only Grapevine evidence. In that thread, Bertin Lefkovic wondered where jmelli got that information because it was not verified on Google or anywhere else.

You would think, if this were true, that PoliticsNJ or the Star Ledger would have picked it up by now.

So in a display of the self-correcting nature of the blogosphere, I called Menendez's office just now, 9 am on Monday morning, and asked them. The greeter told me that jmelli is wrong. Menendez is not supporting the filibuster. Yet.

So get on those phones and call him at (202) 224-4744. The time is now!

Kire :: Menendez Not Supporting Filibuster. Yet.
UPDATE: According to the yellow section on PoliticsNJ:

Sen. Bob Menendez will deliver his first floor speech as a United States Senator at 2:40 PM today, to discuss the nomination of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Sen. Frank Lautenberg will also address the Senate on Alito, at 2:20 PM.  (01/30/06)

what is wrong with Lautenberg and Menendez? (4.00 / 1)
Is it the Jersey thing? Do they have some link to Alito or some obligation to him or associates? I do not understand. Anybody have background information on how these three guys may be linked in NJ?

27/F/NJ

I added the "yet" to the title. (4.00 / 1)
I don't want you to think he is categorically against a filibuster. I don't think there's anything wrong with either of them on this. They are just undecidcd, that's all. Keep calling, and keep it civil. As Scott McLellan would say, if you have anything specific, please bring it to our attention and we'll investigate.

could Juan, or whomever, put the tags back? They were lost when I edited the diary and I can't find how to do that myself.

People with "trusted user" status are able to add and modify tags. Those without can only select from a pre-defined list. Make sure you rate up good comments so that more people get TU status.

Geez! (4.00 / 1)
This is why I didn't want Menendez to replace Corzine.  You think we would have battled with Corzine over Alito?
He would have made passioned speeches against him and would support a filibuster.

By the way, word has it that Alito hails from Menendez's district.  I betcha he is getting pressure from the family.

Et tu Lautenberg?

I am already losing my interest in Menendez versus Kean Junior.  Does it make a freakin difference when he will lay down like this?

Yeah, I'll keep trying to call - phone lines busy, I sent several faxes already.

We'll know at 2:40pm, according to staff (0.00 / 0)
Alito is from Hamilton, which is not in Menendez's old district (the 13th).  Menendez is from Union City, I thought, now Hoboken.

He made us sweat but (0.00 / 0)
Lautenberg is voting against Alito.  Menendez is speaking and he sounds like a no as well.  How they vote on cloture is still up in the air.

Menendez is NO (0.00 / 0)
Thx for the correction on Menendez's location!

Menendez is NO!
From deomocrats.com, Lautenberg is a HELL NO!

I like Menendez's line that it don't matter where you are from but where you are going!

I have no idea if either are committed to a filibuster.

as of 3:35 (0.00 / 0)

as of 3:35 (just spoke with his DC office) menendez is "no" on nomination but "undecided" on fillibuster.

cheers --
