Every NJ Congressional District Will Be Challenged

by: Juan Melli

Mon Apr 10, 2006 at 01:42:35 PM EDT

Update 3 (A big one, so I'm posting it up top): There WILL be two Democratic challengers to Frank LoBiondo in NJ-2. Fairfield Township councilwoman Viola Thomas-Hughes and Henry David Marcus will compete in the primary. This now means that every Republican House member in New Jersey will face a challenger in November.

According to the Division of Elections, Gary Schiavone has filed to challenge Chris Smith in the 4th Congressional district. With about two hours left until the filing deadline, no Democrat has filed in the 2nd yet to challenge LoBiondo.

The GOP has failed to file challenges to Rob Andrews (NJ-1) and Donald Payne (NJ-10).

Update 1: Donald Payne (NJ-10) will have a challenger in the primary, and Michael Cino has just filed to challenge Garrett in the primary. Assemblywoman Oadline Truitt (D) from the 28th legislative district will face a primary challenge.

Update 2: (via politicsnj)

Joe Vas filed petitions to run for the full 2-year term in the 13th district, but not for the Special Election.

John Ginty filed petitions to seek the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate today.  Ginty filed with 1,742 signatures.

James Kelly, a resident of a group home for the mentally disabled , filed as a U.S. Senate candidate in the primary against Bob Menendez.

Joe Sinagra against Holt (0.00 / 0)
According to Wally Edge, Joe Sinagra will challenge Holt for the Republicans.  I wonder if, in addition to hoping Junior Kean will be mistaken for his dad, the GOP is hoping that voters in the 12th District will think that it's actually Frank Sinatra challenging Holt and vote for Ol' Blue Eyes.

I Know (0.00 / 0)
I was just pointing out that there IS actually someone to get him confused with in the district. Not that Jack's popularity could even come close to the Chairman of the Board... :-)

Oh (0.00 / 0)
Didn't get that.  Sorry.

Now I hear there's a Guarini running for Congress in Hudson County.  But it isn't Justin.  Sinagra, Kean, Guarini.  Is name confusion the last, best hope for Republicans in New Jersey?

I don't know you Viola... (4.00 / 1)
... but I am so proud of you for stepping up to this challenge. I know you face an uphill battle against the infamous Congressman Lobo, but hey - where else in the country is there a clear path to the democratic nomination for the House in what is basically a Blue District?

Kudos!

Um, ....ok.... (0.00 / 0)
These updates are making me crazy!

I guess I'm proud of Henry David Marcus too?
And I hope election night in NJ-2 has as many surprises as filing day!

Menendez and Pallone? (0.00 / 0)
I just checked the division of elections website, and as of 5pm Menendez hadn't filed for Senate and Congressman Pallone didnt file in District 6.  Is there a reason these guys didnt file???
or are they still allowed to file as of 5pm?

Corzine Budget Propels Kean to Lead in New Poll

State Sen. Tom Kean Jr. (R) can thank Gov. Jon Corzine (D) for his recent good showing in a poll gauging his chances against Sen. Bob Menendez (D).

According to a Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll, Kean trumped Menendez 42 percent to 38 percent, due to voters’ disaffection with Corzine’s state budget proposal, New York Newsday reported.

“Last month, Sen. Menendez got wide and positive exposure for his opposition to the Dubai Ports World taking over the facility in Newark, poll director Peter Woolley said. “This month, Tom Kean has the opportunity to respond to the governor’s unpopular budget proposals.

Menendez led in last month’s PublicMind poll, 42 percent to 37 percent.

This latest poll, of 685 registered voters, was conducted March 27-April 2 and had a 4 percent margin of error.

In a related development, financial data analyst John Ginty announced late last week that he had collected enough petition signatures to qualify for the Republican primary and run against Kean.
