Gary Schiavone OUT in NJ-04

by: MrLiberal

( - promoted by jmelli)

I just recieved an e-mail from Gary Schiavone, the Democratic nominee to take on Congressman Chris Smith in NJ-04. In it, he says the following:

"I am writing to everyone concerned to announce that I have reconsidered my run for Congress, and I will not be running for the United States Congress this year, due to conflict with my current employment and The Hatch Act (5 U.S.C. 1502-1508) which restricts the political activity of individuals principally employed by state, county, or municipal executive agencies in connection with programs financed in whole or in part by loans or grants made by the United States or a federal agency. Under this law, I cannot accept or actively seek this public office, and I am officially declaring myself not a candidate for this position (U.S. Congressman) or for any public office, so as not to be in conflict with The Hatch Act.  I am asking all concerned who have assisted me in the planning, not to participate on my behalf in any activities directed toward me seeking any ele cted office.

Thank you once again, Gary Schiavone"

This e-mail was sent to me and a number of other supporters about 15 minutes ago.

It's clear that we need a write-in candidate, or else we're not going to have a candidate against Chris Smith in 2006. NJ-04 includes Ocean, Burlington, Monmouth and Mercer County portions, with important towns including Hamilton, Colts Neck, Burlington and Brick. 100 votes are needed via write-in (according to NJ state law) for a candidate to make it onto the ballot.

I hope that we at Blue Jersey can help locate a competent and willing candidate soon.

NJ 4 (4.00 / 1)
What the hell is going on couldn't he have announced this before filings closed????

Chris Smith is Almost as Backwards as Scott Garrett... (4.00 / 1)
If someone down there (I'm up in Rothman territory) gets it together to choose a competent qualified individual who wishes to make a real run to be a write in candidate...

I'll pledge 4 hours of my time to do some calling of registered Democratic voters to write in that individual.  Just organise it and put together a good list of targeted registerd Democrats.

It occurrs to me that the very Democrats who signed this poor schlubs nominating petition should all be contacted to write in an alternative....there had to be at least two hundred of them!

Who knows, maybe someone truly talented and charismatic and smart and highly competent will run and their campaign will positively catch fire and...good bye Smith!!!

Imagine!!!  ;-)

Y'all can reach me (for this purpose) at nilent@gmail.com

Thanks FogerRox (0.00 / 1)
I'll follow through at the site.

Who knows, Smith might get deservedly swept away in a historic anti-Bush backlash?!!!  Let's make it happen!!!  :-)
