Bill Grippo Ousted as Franklin Township (Somerset) Democratic Chair

by: DBK

Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 08:32:07 AM EDT

Bill Grippo of Franklin Township in Somerset County was ousted as Democratic municipal chair last night in favor of Planning Board member Roz Sherman by a vote of 52-32.  The vote signalled a significant change in the leadership of the Franklin Township Democratic organization, which had fluorished under Bill Grippo in a way that was unmatched by any other Democratic organization in the county.  Franklin's Town Council has nine voting members, and with Grippo leading the municipal organization, the Democrats now hold eight of those votes.

If all politics is local, nothing is nastier than local politics.  The Democratic committee meeting at which the vote took place was contentious and often bitter, with rumors of a particularly nasty sort being circulated by both sides' supporters.  Former State Senator John A. Lynch Jr. was rumored first to be in bed with one side and then the other.  These rumors were countered by some especially interesting facts:  many of the people who now support Roz Sherman's bid for the municipal chair were former protege's of Bill Grippo.  Councilmember Brian Regan (COuncilman-at-large) had been a Republican, but became a Democrat and received Grippo's support in his town council bid.  When Councilmember Jim  Vassanella (Councilmember, 5th Ward) ran for his seat one year ago, he was not a popular choice with the Democrats in general, but Bill Grippo gave  Vassanella his support and  Vassanella became the party's choice.  Former candidate for County Sheriff Efrem Dato owed his job to Grippo's influence.  Regan, Vassanella, and Dato were among Sherman's most visible and influential supporters as she made her push for municipal chair.  This was just one source of much of the bitterness, with Grippo supporters expressing their views of what they saw as disloyalty.

The alleged bone of contention was that Grippo had too much influence and control, but one Councilmember who was supportive of Grippo dismissed that as ridiculous, saying that her vote is her own and that nobody told her how to cast it.

The last straw, according to the challengers, was the Bennetts-Veronica development, which was added to the township's affordable housing plan last month.  Councilmember Theresea Danile (2nd Ward) addressed the meeting and stated that the statements being made about the Bennets-Veronica development were incorrect, that the township had to have a plan passed immediately or a judge would throw the entire township open to development at the whims of the builders, so that if the plan, with Bennetts-Veronica included, was not passed, then the feared overdevelopment would be inevitable.  In other words, some development had to be accepted in order to avoid having builders take control of the township's development entirely.  Residents complained that the Bennetts-Veronica development, which was just one part of the plan, would increase traffic, endanger the environment, and degrade their community.

A number of committee persons addressed the meeting, with several calling for unity in the face of the deep divisions that now threaten the local party organization and its dominance over municipal government.  A number of speakers stated that the division within the party would lead to Republicans gaining strength in the community.

A curious side story is the accusation that some members of the party are more insidious than mere DINOs (Democrats in Name Only), and are actually Republicans seeking to destroy the party from within.  Phil Kramer a member of the group that opposed Grippo, is a former Republican and runs a web site for something called Taxpayers United in Franklin Township.  Taxpayers United in Franklin Township frequently supports Republican candidates and its web site has been the source of some of the nastiest claims, one of which led to an investigation of Councilmember Ellen Ritchie for allegedly threatening the political career of planning board member of Michael Orsini.  If you go to the Taxpayers United for Franklin Township web site and read and watch all of the supporting documentation for the allegations against Councilmember Ritchie, you find the allegations to be the sort of misrepresented material that ruins reputations over nothing.  Her alleged "admission" of her "threatening remark" is no more than an angry remark over what she saw as betrayal and dishonesty and hardly dangerous.  The tell-tale sign that this is much ado about nothing is that, whenever Kramer or others quote what Ritchie is alleged to have said, they leaves out portions of the remark to which Councilmember "admitted".  The parts he leaves out provide exactly the sort of context that clarify the entire situation.  An honest attempt to inform would not leave out those portions of her remarks.  The nature of the campaign against both Grippo and Ritchie gives some support to the claims that there really are DINOs roaming Franklin Township.

Sounds like a combination of a kneejerk reaction against development looking for a shin to kick and a targeted effort to undermine the party.  In other words, we circled the firing squad and they just ran around yelling, "Fire!"

"allegations to be the sort of misrepresented material that ruins reputations over nothing"

hmmm, that reminds me of a primary earlier this month...

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Oh, it's nasty stuff all right (0.00 / 0)
This was a pretty nasty little set-to, and it is going to reverberate for a while.  Grippo has been a very successful and dedicated municipal chair and he deserves a lot of the credit for the way that the Democrats succeeded in Franklin Township.  It remains to be seen whether the people who worked with him to make the party so successful in Franklin will stay and help Roz Sherman and the group she lead to oust Grippo and a bunch of other committee people.  If they don't, Franklin will probably see a lot of council seats picked up by the Republicans and a lot of people will have regrets.  I think the thing that gave Sherman and her group their opening was Grippo's style, which may have put a few noses out of joint (he's a nice guy, by the way, so don't take what I said wrong, but I think he may be a bit autocratic and that is especially off-putting to Democrats).

The Phil Kramer web site is full of mean little allegations that fall short of libel but set up a set of implications that lack anything but the actual implication.  It's nasty stuff.  And I did not at all like the way that the entire quote to which Councilmember Ritchie "admitted" was truncated to serve Kramer's and others' purposes.  It makes Kramer and his associates look dishonest to me, to be perfectly frank.  I probably should have linked all the relevant pieces, but the posting wasn't meant to be about Kramer and his nasty little site and I didn't want to dwell on it at length.  I prefer that people take some time and check the site out for themselves, rather than go by my characterization of it.  I figure that more people will be turned off by artfully presented allegations that, in the end, lack real substance.  The nasty tone of the site is another turn-off.  I give our readers a lot of credit for being smart enough to read this stuff and make up their own minds.

GREAT summary (0.00 / 0)
Very well done. Local issues are hard to capture, and you did an excellent and fair job.

Franklin Twp. subtext (0.00 / 0)
Franklin Township politics are known for all sorts of "behind the scenes" acts.  There were several other hands involved in the removal of Bill Grippo.  The most cloaked of these happens to be a disciple of former Sen. John A. Lynch Jr. and a local newspaper publisher.  This guy happens to be good at manipulating (more so than Grippo.)  The publisher somehow got Grippo and several other Democratic party officials to wage a campaign against the newspaper so he could buy it for peanuts from the Republican family who previously owned it.  The paper was then run to make the local Republicans look like loonie toons.  The paper was previously a liability for the Franklin Democratic Party.  With the paper out of the way (now running little more than boiler plate and submitted pictures), progress was made in building the party from within.  Make no mistake the publisher does everything Sen. Lynch wants.  Grippo first became a liability for the party when he did not win election as mayor.  The inability to secure development approval for several underutilized parcels in the town added to that liability.  Who knows but Sen. Lynch himself if Grippo was ordered for elimination.  It is known, however, that the publisher has a record of service to Sen. Lynch.  Call it spring cleaning if you like.

Inre Rumors (4.00 / 1)
By the way, I deliberately left out a number of remarks that were made at the committee meeting regarding connections to John Lynch because they stunk of rumor and innuendo and lacked substance.  I have heard it said that nobody pours a concrete sidewalk in Middlesex or Somerset Counties without Lynch dipping his bill, and I don't doubt that he has a great deal of influence and makes a lot of money from public works, but nobody ever said "boo" about Lynch and Grippo for six years while Grippo was the municipal chair and the Dems were succeeding wildly in the township.  I took the Lynch aspect to be part of the nasty and unworthy rumors that were associated with this particular Dem committee election.  My take was that, with Lynch under investigation by the FBI and with Lynch having given money to Grippo's mayoral campaign, these facts were used in a purely political way in the campaign against Grippo for municipal chair.  That usage lacked any credibility and, lacking credibility, I wasn't going to repeat the remarks here.  It doesn't mean I don't want to hear them myself, because if I can piece the real story together, I would like that.  Besdies, I like a hot piece of gossip as much as anyone.

I won't repeat the remarks about Roz Sherman's alleged associations with Lynch that were made at the meeting.  There was at least one connection between them that was brought up and that had as much substance, to me, as the remarks about Grippo's associations with Lynch.  Given that only associations with Lynch were mentioned and nobody actually had a legitimate accusation of wrong-doing to offer, I found the whole thing to be, as I said, unworthy.  Maybe some folks think that's how you play the game, but I think that's how you play the dirty game, and it makes me want to work against everyone who crawled down in that mud.

By the way, I went to the Franklin Township Town Council meeting last night.  I am on the fence as to whether I should post anything on it.  There were genuine fireworks in which the people's business was ignored for a while in favor of what was truly political business, and while I found it to be great theater, I did not find it to be good government.  The reason I don't know whether to post on it or not is that it has nothing to do with progressive politics.  I don't view this site as a Democratic organ, but a progressive organ.  I don't think that the site is about any and all politics in NJ either, but should concentrate on progressive politics, its status and promotion.  The municipal chairmanship of a successful Democratic organization in a Republican county struck me as interesting to progressives.

With respect to the council meeting, I do wish I had brought popcorn.  And a juice drink.
