NY Times: History Disagrees with Kean Junior

by: Hopeful

Sat Jun 24, 2006 at 11:15:25 PM EDT

(Bumped, because the Star Ledger also says the same thing. Reality: 2, Tom Kean Jr: 0 - promoted by jmelli)

Readers of bluejersey already know Kean's attacks on  Bob Menenedez are false, but now the New York Times weighs in.  Their verdict:  "The Kean accusations find no support in those records or from independent authorities of that era."
Hopeful :: NY Times: History Disagrees with Kean Junior
Over twenty years ago young Bob Menendez helped fight political corruption in Hudson County and testified against political boss William Musto.  But the Kean campaign has shamelessly denied the truth of these events.  After all, the Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry worked.  But this time, the New York Times notes that there are actual facts:

To a depth unusual for events that are decades old, the Kean campaign's accusations can be measured against a robust historical record — including F.B.I. tapes and volumes of trial testimony — of a roiling human and legal drama between 1978 and 1982 in Union City.

How do the four prosescutors describe Menendez's role: "an act of courage", "he was very gutsy and courageous", and "There certainly was never any deal, or any need for a deal. Menendez just testified truthfully."

In the trial itself, Menendez not only had no deal, but the contractor twice testified that Menendez was not bribed.

But then the Kean people say Menendez was only brave because he was forced to testify.  Not so according to the historical record says the NY Times:

However, Mr. Menendez's role, while not palpably dramatic, was pivotal in undermining the scheme and involved far more than responding to a subpoena. The contractor, Mr. Orlandini, testified that by late 1978 and early 1979, Mr. Menendez was making trouble over the false paperwork Mr. Orlandini used to generate cash for bribes.

"Bobby Menendez was starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Mr. Orlandini testified, forcing him to go behind Mr. Menendez's back to keep the cash flowing.

Even before the trial, Menendez opposed Musto's candidates.

This time, neither Menendez nor the independent press will stand for shameless Republican lies.  Kean Jr. should apologize to the man he is trying to smear.

here is Steve Gilliard's take on same article (0.00 / 0)

Jim Dwyer covered North Jersey earlier in his career. I covered the same towns in the mid-1980's. I can say that Menendez was not a crook, considering the number of people who went to jail in that period and after, if Bob Menendez was a crook, his ass would be in jail. Everyone else went. The county leader, mayors, school board officials. All crooks, all jailed.

Let me put it this way, if Menendez was a private citizen, Tom Kean would be facing a libel suit. North Jersey politics is no joke, it's rough and tumble. It's the Sopranos without the guns. To survive that without an indictment is amazing. You can't be cutting corners, because they all go to jail.

A telling comment from the article

A film about Mr. Menendez is being made with guidance from a Kean campaign contractor; that contractor, without disclosing his affiliation or the nature of the project, asked for help from this reporter, who covered Union City 26 years ago.

It's important that the Menendez campaign jump on this NOW, before the media has time to frame this as a "he said she said" story.

The Star Ledger account is worth reading.  jmelli provides the link above.  Here's my favorite bit:

In early 1981 Menendez publicly distanced himself from Musto by backing a school board candidate against Powers. He gave a speech right in front of Musto in which he said that when a father is an alcoholic, a son's duty is to take away the bottle -- a reference to Powers, Menendez now says. Powers won the election.

and

Menendez formed an alliance with other dissidents mainly from within Musto's organization. Scarinci recalls an October 1981 speech in which he responded to a boast by Musto that he had "given everyone a seat at the table." Menendez's retort: "Yeah, but we didn't steal the silverware."

This must have taken a great deal of courage and integrity.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo
