The Plame game

by: Congressman Rush Holt

Sun Oct 30, 2005 at 03:33:22 PM EST

Friday’s indictment of Scooter Libby, Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff, for obstruction of justice, perjury, and making false statements is indicative of this Administration’s larger plan to forward its agenda at any cost, and it was the American people that paid – until now.  It is plain now that from the start the Bush Administration was committed to making its case for the Iraq War, and it would not let the facts get in the way.  Where the evidence differed from their script, they ignored it, buried it, and destroyed the credibility of those who brought it forth, and evidence suggests they did so illegally.

We must remember that any disclosure of covert identities has damaging effects on our country’s human intelligence collection capabilities.  We ask many men and women to take risks around the world to collect information in order to prevent war and protect the safety and effectiveness of our soldiers.  When a leak like this happens, there is a ripple of damage.  Not only is the original covert operative compromised, but so are all the people who had contact with her overseas.  The people with whom Valerie Plame dealt with overseas – other covert agents and informants, for example – have almost certainly been compromised.

To provide the oversight we are obligated to do, Congress must examine how this leak occurred, assess the damage to current and future intelligence collection, and review options for preventing similar episodes in the future.  Our intelligence professionals need to know that Congress will help them preserve their cover, which is the only real protection they have in their often dangerous job collecting information to protect America.

My central point is: whatever happens in the courts, Congress owes it to our intelligence operatives to exert oversight in this matter.

I will be appearing on CBS’s 60 Minutes, tonight at 7:00 p.m. discussing the Plame leak and its consequences. I hope you’ll tune in, and I welcome your comments.

do you find it disturbing (0.00 / 0)
that many of the commentators that tend to lean right or openly stand on the right are shrugging the indictment off as that they found there was nothing wrong because they didnt indict for leaking the name

also, do you think the vice president owes the american people an explanation for his role along with mr libby in witholding intelligence from the senate committee and then saying that senators had the same intelligence he did?

Re: do you find it disturbing (0.00 / 0)
I was pleased that Fitzgerald in his statement on Friday clearly made the point that although the indictment was for perjury, that behind this was a serious breach of national security. The prosecutor will not allow people to dismiss this as just a technicality as Senator Hutchinson, among others, has tried to do.

The Vice President certainly owes the nation an explanation on this and I think the President does too. At least for why they asserted for months that the White House had no role in this matter at all.

2 questions on verified voting: (4.00 / 1)
On behalf of NeoLiberal at mydd:

1. What are the chances of H.R. 550 being passed within the current sitting of the house? At all?

2. Why isn't a sister liegislation to HR550 being simultaneously pursued in the Senate? I am sure that many Senators would be willing to take it up in the senate. Perhaps Dick Durbin?

Re: 2 questions on verified voting (4.00 / 1)
1. It's not out of the question that we could get it done in this Congress. The reason is not that the leadership in Congress is eager to move forward with it, but that the public outcry is almost deafening. My colleagues tell me that they can't hold a town meeting in any town in their district without someone bringing this subject up. This is an example of how our legislative process is supposed to work. In this case it appears possible that public involvement will drive the legislative process. I would not have 160 co-sponsors if it weren't for concerted efforts in many Congressional districts all over the country.

2. There is corresponding legislation in the Senate.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Congressman Holt, thanks for answering and for championing this cause.

And thanks for posting my question, jmelli.

Some quick followup questions, Congressman, although I am not sure if you are still here.

1a. How is HR 550 faring, vis-a-vis HR 3910, which seems to be GOP's preferred voting reform legislation? Apparently a couple of HR550's co-sponsors are also on the HR 3910 bandwagon. How many other republicans do you think you will be able to get onboard? How many are leaning?

Also, what kind of challenges, partisan politics wise, does this injection of "Voter ID" into the discussion pose to HR550?

I would also like to draw your attention to a good daily Kos diary here.

And BTW, it will be great to see you live-blog at dKos. It will help generate even more momentum to this effort. Sooner the better, since the session has only a few weeks left (I was told that it closes for holidays around thanks giving, and will then return early next year).

1b. The billpage on HR 550 (link) shows no movement whatsoever since 2/2/05. Could you please layout the precise steps involved, for somone that does not know the detailed inner workings of the house, in getting this to a floor vote in the next few weeks? Who will have to move what?

"2. There is corresponding legislation in the Senate."

2b. I was told in that dKOs diary that there isn't an exact parallel of HR550 in the senate. If this understanding is mistaken, could you please mention and talk about the senate bills that you'd consider relevant, including the S.330?

Thanks.

has the congressman left for the day?

and thanks BTW.

[ Parent ]
yes he has (0.00 / 0)
he stuck around for about an hour but had to head off to Trenton.

we (0.00 / 0)
should do a more heavily promoted version next time. dKos MSOC's My Left Wing would be better places for this next time.

Don't know if you saw this diary by Jennifer Clare: link. Wish Rush was present there.

Let me suggest this for a do over:
- set up another time slot with Rep. RH. (2-2.5 hrs would be good)
- Plan for a session at dKos, and advertise it before hand all over the place as you did this time.
- Just 15 mins before the session, advertise again (remember that dKos allows only 1 diary in any 24 hour window), and this time explicitly ask for recommendations.
- then, after the session starts, and include the link in all the promotionary diaries, by adding it at the top of the diary using the "Edit diary feature".

- get in touch with Jennifer Claire well before hand, and organize the event with her. You can try reaching her by responding to one of her comments at dKos.

Let me know what you think, and if you schedule another day, please post the details here. I'll return to check for your response.

thanks

dKos would be great (0.00 / 0)
These are good suggestions.  Rep. Holt was good on TPMCafe.
But remember, the Giants and then the Eagles were on!

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

Libby is their fall guy (0.00 / 0)
It seems fairly obvious to me that Libby is to be the administration's fall guy for this entire affair.  Cheney and Rove (and who knows who else) should also be in the public spotlight, but so far I've seen the news media turn their attention to Libby.  What do you think the members of congress, and the people at large can do to continue to put pressure on ALL the players in this case?

Re: Libby is their fall guy (0.00 / 0)
I have tried to get Congress to accept its oversight role in this. In eight separate votes, largely along party lines, my Resolution to seek records and data on this has been turned down. This indictment gives us another opportunity to try again.

Thank you and some questions... (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for your work in trying to underscore the dire consequences we all face as a result of the Bush administration's determination to go to war at all costs.

Thank you, too, for your work on verified voting... can you give us a quick update on that?

And, with my inbox filling up on an almost daily basis with one online petition or another, I'm wondering if you could talk about what really "counts" with you as you're trying to figure out what your constituents care about?  Letters, phonecalls, visits, emails, petitions... I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

In peace,
Shelley Krause

To insanity... and beyond! (Apologies to Buzz Lightyear.)

Re: Thank you and some questions... (0.00 / 0)
In my office, I give equal weight to all constituent input, however it comes. I would prefer that it not come in faxes because blast faxes tend to clog things up, but email, snail mail, phone calls or visits on the street all get equal attention.

make them accountable (0.00 / 0)
Treason by any other name is treason. Its practicioners and enablers now lean on the levers of power, and it is becoming more clear that they are working against and not for the majority of Americans. Tokyo Rose was less of a threat than the thugs inhabiting the seat of power. It is apparent that they believe there is no line that can't be crossed to achieve political success. It is up to us, the real Americans, to stem treason's tide and restore accountability to government. A few short ropes and high tree limbs just might do the trick. Lying scumbags and war profiteers will get their just desserts.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
