Pajero del Dia: Steve Lonegan

by: Juan Melli

Mon Jul 10, 2006 at 05:35:56 PM EDT

Our tosser of the day, via Think Progress:
Mayor Steve Lonegan (R) of Bogota, New Jersey is “calling for a McDonald’s boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard advertising iced coffee.
Lonegan said the advertisement is “offensive and “divisive because it sends a message that Hispanic immigrants do not need to learn English.

“The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language, Lonegan said. “And when McDonald’s sends a different message, that we’re going to be different now, that causes resentment.

Se envuelve en la bandera para ocultar su racismo. Y qué exhibición de ignorancia de los principios del mercado libre!  Ãndate a la mierda, pajero.

YA BASTA!!

Lonegan, once again, is alone again.

XT

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Lonegan binds us together (0.00 / 0)
our common language doesn't bind us together, our common belief in freedom and the possibility that anyone can achieve their dreams is what binds us as a nation, if anything is divisive and offensive, it is having Lonegan as the mayor of Bogota. how the hell did this guy get elected anyway, bogota is not the wealthiest town in bergen

Doofus! (0.00 / 0)
The good mayor is also blissfully unaware of the delicious irony that his town is named after the capital of Colombia.

I'm Lovin' It!

It shares a name a spelling, it's not named after it. (0.00 / 0)
I pointed this out upthread, but Bogota, New Jersey derives its name from the Bogert family.  So it's less ironic than it might seem.

Steve Lonegan is a mouth-breather.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Missing the point? (0.00 / 0)
I think you've all missed the point. A GOP politician who champions the cause of "English only" is really giving a signal to frustrated non-hispanics that it is okay to scapegoat the hispanics and blame them for all that is wrong in the area/state/nation. I think Lonegan is just being a good GOP soldier doing what he has been told to do by the party.

This is the kind of whisper tactic I expected to be used against Menendez. There will be continuing episodes across the state - but particularly in North Jersey - as we draw closer to the election. If I were running the show for Kean, I would use this "English only" campaign by surrogates as a softening up tactic. Then just before the election I would seriously consider creating a tv commercial featuring Menendez speaking to a crowd in Spanish - maybe with a tagline something like "how can you trust him when you don't know what he's saying?" Let that fade out to Kean promising to clean up corruption or some such nonsense.

"English only" is just another screwdriver in the GOP toolbox. Not that they'd ever screw us, you understand.

(Drop the chalupa?)
What is this racist SOB gonna do when Taco Bell comes to town?
Shit, if On the Border opens a franchise in Teaneck, he'll probably call the National Guard.

Be thankful for Steve (0.00 / 0)
Most states have a gaggle of Bible Belters who waste ink in newspapers when they try and teach kids that the universe was created a few thousand years ago in seven days, tell us that certain Teletubbies are secret agents of the gay agenda and beat up the Easter Bunny.

The best we can do is get topical opinions from Steve Lonegan (sorry, Marie Tasy, but keep trying).
