Will Our Republican Congressmen Vote for Leaders Who Protected a Child Predator?

by: Hopeful

Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 10:37:25 PM EDT

As you know, yesterday Republican Mark Foley resigned from Congress after ABC reported on his e-mails and instant messages to a 16-year old boy who was then a page.  But although this came out yesterday, the problems were already known.  First, what the pages (yes, pages) say:

One former page tells ABC News that his class was warned about Foley by people involved in the program.

Other pages told ABC News they were hesitant to report Foley because of his power in Congress.

Who else knew?  Well, the list now includes John Boehner (Majority Leader), Thomas Reynolds (head of the RNCC), and Speaker Dennis Hastert.  The New York Times:

“Despite the fact that I had not seen the e-mails in question, and Mr. Alexander told me that the parents didn’t want the matter pursued, I told the speaker of the conversation Mr. Alexander had with me,” Mr. Reynolds said.

For years our "moderate" Republicans have enabled the extreme right-wing policies by their leadership votes.  New Jersey Republicans Frank LoBiondo, Jim Saxton, Chris Smith, Scott Garrett, Mike Ferguson, and Rodney Frelinghuysen now face a simple question they must answer publicly:  Will they vote for a Majority Leader and a Speaker who knowingly covered up for a pedophile?

will voters continue to elect Boehner and Hastert and Reynolds, et at?  They have to win an election before they run for leadership positions.

It's deeper than that in PA - check out Cheney & Santorum's support for Sherwood (4.00 / 1)
Cheney was trying to shore up a GOP incumbent involved in scandal last week, Don Sherwood (PA-10), and Santorum wouldn't condemn him and made campaign calls for his primary in May, despite the unsavory details of his extra-marital affair and settlement of a $5 million civil suit for abuse from a Young Republican.  From The Hill last May:

Santorum calls to shore up Sherwood

Rep. Don Sherwood (R-Pa.), who acknowledged having an extramarital affair with a younger woman with whom he also settled a lawsuit last year, has enlisted help from conservative Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) to win his May 16 primary.

Sherwood ramped up the intensity of his campaign last week by raising money, mailing letters to his supporters and advertising on the radio. But Santorum's automated phone calls have generated the most attention in the state.

"Today I'm calling to ask a favor of you," says Santorum... "I need you to join me in supporting Don Sherwood for reelection."

He continues, "We fight to make sure our communities get their fair shares, whether it's in federal funds, first responders or police officers or improving our roads and bridges. -- That's why I hope you'll join me in supporting Congressman Don Sherwood."

The calls started last week, said Jerry Morgan, Sherwood's campaign manager.

Sherwood also picked up the pace of his fundraising at the end of April by raising $14,300 in a two-day period... He reported having $618,565 on hand at the end of March.

On March 14, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) kicked $11,300 in to Sherwood's campaign, according to the FEC reports.

His primary opponent, Kathy Scott, has not filed a report with the FEC, which indicates that she has spent less than $5,000.

Scott described herself as a centrist Republican with a libertarian bent and refused to say who she voted for in 2004. She added that she is running a low-budget campaign and is depending on personal contact and word of mouth to generate support...

Sherwood's personal life became an issue in 2004 when Cynthia Ore, then 29 years old, accused him of choking her. Sherwood denied the incident, and no charges were filed. In the 2004 campaign, Sherwood's opponent on the Constitution Party ticket gave details of the police report to the media.

Sherwood admitted to having a five-year affair with Ore, who later sued him, accusing him of abuse. They reached an out-of-court settlement in November, and neither has disclosed any details.

Morgan dismissed questions about whether the calls from Santorum were designed to prop up Sherwood's image among conservative Republican voters, who might be turned off by the affair and the settlement agreement.

Virginia Davis, a spokeswoman for Santorum, declined to address Santorum's conservative beliefs as they relate to Sherwood's personal behavior.

"Senator Santorum has had a strong working relationship with Representative Sherwood for many years. He is pleased to support him in his reelection," she said in an e-mailed statement.

Ok, she wasn't a child, but she appears to have been physically assaulted in the choking incident, so GOP hypocrisy applies.  Santorum is on record accusing Clinton over the allegations from Lewinsky, but when its his GOP brethren, S. counsels a wait-and-see-how-the-lawsuit-will-shake-out attitude.

Gotta love their decency. And do you think our Barnegat-girl-does-good was serving up crow on Air Force II?  Or maybe something more subversive?  One can only hope.

Chris Carney is running against Sherwood, and if I recall correctly, is actually ahead in a poll.  When I read about this story back at the primary, I gave at the actblue donation link.  I can live with a certain lebel of dubious financial dealings, but choking your mistress or tring to seduce your teenage intern is intolerable.  Pennsylvania should take care of both Sherwood and Santorum.

John Laesch is running against Dennis Hastert and is another fine candidate.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

"Signs Point to Yes"

Hmmm. Why doesn't that surprise me? Can't wait to hear the answer straight from the shameful six themselves.
