"Ferguson ... grabbed her by the arm and pulled her towards her"

by: huntsu

Some of the Linda Stender mail pieces have been hard-hitting, some have been a little blander.  But this one shows that the campaign has chutzpa and is ready to take the fight to Mike Ferguson for the next two weeks.

For those who don't know, Ferguson was in a row back a few years where he got in a bar tussle in Georgtown with a woman and only his staffers saved it from being a big mess.  Mailing this piece just a little over a week after the Mark Foley shenanigans hit the news is bold and extremely aggressive.

Mike Ferguson's Night on the Town

It's good to see the Stender campaign jumping on this and pointing out the hypocricy of Ferguson's protestations against Foley.  He is part of the problem, and the folks in NJ7 need to realize that.

This piece, with the party graphic, the loud callout on the front page and the entire news article with no redactions makes the point clearly.

The Congressman's Night on the Town
By Lloyd Grove, Washington Post Page C03, April 4, 2003

Washington -- In his dark suit, knotted tie and official congressional ID pin on his lapel, Republican House member Mike Ferguson looked out of place at the Rhino Bar and Pumphouse, a Georgetown saloon popular with college kids.

"He shouldn't have even been at the bar," 21-year-old Georgetown University junior Michelle Mezoe told us. "He and his group" – two unidentified staffers, also wearing suits – "stuck out like sore thumbs."

Yesterday Mezoe accused the congressman, a 32-year-old married father of three representing New Jersey's 7th District, of grabbing her in the wee hours Wednesday morning. She said Ferguson removed his ID pin and handed it to her, saying she could keep it if she would "come back and have a drink with me." Mezoe said she refused to return it unless Ferguson apologized for his "disrespectful" behavior. An apology was not forthcoming.

Ferguson initially refused to speak to us, leaving his chief of staff, Chris Jones, to counter: "What I can tell you is this is absolutely ridiculous and false... The congressman emphatically denies this." Jones wasn't at the bar.

Late last night Ferguson changed his mind and dictated to us the following statement:

"I was having a couple of beers with my staff when she approached us and noticed my pin and began to ask about it. In a conversation that lasted fewer than five minutes, I had taken off my pin to show it to her. She then took the pin and walked away, and wouldn't give it back until the police were called. Any other sensational stories about this are outrageous and false."

Mezoe said the incident began around 1 a.m. as she strolled past Ferguson, who was leaning against the bar on the second floor. She said Ferguson, a Georgetown alum, grabbed her by the arm and pulled her toward him, introducing himself as a member of Congress. He pulled out his congressional ID card, she said, and pointed to his pin. "That's special," she said sarcastically. "Yes, it is special," he replied earnestly, she said.

"He came across as very arrogant, as though he was invincible," Mezoe said. "He appeared older, slightly balding, not someone I wanted to talk to. . . . It was very obvious I was a student and not someone to sit down and talk politics with over a late-night drink. I don't think he was interested in my political views."

Mezoe told us that as last call was announced, Ferguson gave her the pin – which she attached to her shirt. When she declined Ferguson's offer to "come back" for a drink, Mezoe continued, Ferguson demanded his pin back. According to Mezoe and other witnesses, she refused to return it unless he apologized, and walked away.

A Ferguson staffer tried to change her mind. "This guy in a suit came up and said, 'I'm sorry, it's my fault. I brought him here and got him drunk, and that's why he's behaving like this.' He asked for the pin and started stroking my hand. I told him, 'If you think you're helping the situation, you are sadly mistaken.' "

Then, Mezoe added, a young jeans-wearing woman, who seemed to be with Ferguson's group, approached and tried to remove the pin by force, grabbing at her chest. The attempt was unsuccessful. Finally, Mezoe said, she was granted a brief audience with the congressman as his aides stood close by. "What is your perspective on what happened here?" she asked. "You stole my pin and you won't give it back," he answered. To which Mezoe replied: "How old are your children, Congressman Ferguson?"

Mezoe said the staffers immediately interposed themselves between her and their boss. "You have offended the congressman," one informed her, she said.

Ferguson's chief of staff yesterday insisted that no such words were ever uttered, that no hand-stroking occurred, and that no young woman with the congressman's party ever approached Mezoe and grabbed at her.

But everyone agrees that Mezoe stood her ground, even after manager Dave Nelson offered her a $50 gift certificate to return the pin. "I won't be bribed, it's the principle of the thing," Mezoe responded, continuing to insist on an apology. Nelson then called the police, and after 2nd District D.C. Police Officer Robert Ferretti arrived and cuffed one of her wrists, Mezoe said she returned the trinket. No charges were filed, and the police department's public affairs office declined to make Ferretti available for an interview.

I don't know if this will stick. (0.00 / 0)
The Post story is old news, almost 4 years ago, and it's a gossip column, not a real reporter.  On the other hand, I suspect very few voters in the district ever heard anything about it.  Interesting to see whether the flyer works or backfires.  Since Stender is apparently still trailing, it's probably worth the gamble.  In any event, expect Ferguson's people to hypocritically criticize Stender for "going negative."

Culture of Corruption (0.00 / 0)
A month ago, the chances of this backfiring were much greater. At the end of the summer, it was thought that the "Culture of Corruption" talking point had failed, as most voters thought it was only the problem of a few (DeLay, Cunningham, Ney) and didn't spread out to the whole caucus.

But Foley/Hastert/Reynolds/Kitchen-sink has changed everything when it comes to the House races. Page-gate has shown average Americans that the Culture of Corruption has infected every last vestige of the Republican Party. They're scratching their heads wondering, 'Is my member a rotten apple, too?'

Is it the right thing to do, or is it the way campaigns should be run? No, absolutely not.

But will it backfire? I don't think so.

Right Thing To Do? (0.00 / 0)
I say it is right on any level, for the Stender campaign to publicize this published story.

This isn't a matter of digging up personal "dirt"; Feruson's behavior in this instance was in a public place and in front of witnesses.  That's why I'm utterly convinced that Ms Mezoe's story is true and that the Ferguson people are engaged in a complete coverup.

Look at the full context of the two competing versions. It's a no brainer.

Ferguson got away with this because he was in Washington DC and because he is a United States Congressman.  If a 35 year old married guy had behaved in the exact same way in a college bar near Rutgers he likely would have had his head handed to him by some kid trying to be macho and protective of the coed, been kicked out by a bouncer, or wound up arrested for assault.

I would love to see MS Mezoe, Officer Ferretti, the bar manager (Dave Nelson), Ferguson himself, and all of the staff members be witnesses in a trial situation in which peole were testifying under oath and subject to cross examination.

Again, if Mezoe had been some petty thief/nutjob; she would have been arrested on the spot.

Ferguson is a hypocritical sleaze and the Stender campaign is doing the right thing by exposing it.

If people like Ferguson weren't in power George Bush couldn't be getting away with the ongoing insane carnage in  Iraq that is destroying human life and the reputation of The United States; not to mention costing our taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars that we have had to borrow and will wind up costing future taxpayers TRILLIONS of dollars to pay off with interest!

I only wish this had come out earler!

You can be sure that if the Ferguson people had ever found a similar story about Linda Stender in the Washington Post; they would have (rightly!) shared it with the electorate in the blink of an eye.

I wouldn't be so cynical... (0.00 / 0)
As I said, it rings true.

The Washington Post is not a gossip rag.  The cop was never allowed to come forth; and the Congressman never pressed any charges.  If she was lying she would have been crucified.

The people are not as unintelligent or naive as the Bush Republican party would imagine them to be.  They just need to be presented with the facts.

The more Sunlight shed upon these Bush Republicans; the better it is for our Democracy!

It Rings True: Ferguson is Pinned (0.00 / 0)
This incident, like the Hastert/Foley scandal, is 100% indicative and typical of the level of sheer unmitigated hypocrisy that is at the core of the Bush Republican party.

When they are nailed, they lie.  Clearly, had the victim in this case actually been some kind of crazed petty thief who violently snatched a piece of a Congressman's personal property there whould have been a criminal charge pressed; and she'd probably still be in jail or locked up in a mental hospital.  As it is,the local cops abused their authority and bullied the victim into returning the pin which was indeed given to her.

The Congressional sleazebag picked on the wrong coed that night.  Michelle Mezoe was/is a strong, sober, intelligent and righteous young lady who stood her ground against an unholy assault.

This was a married guy who was full of his own sense of power and lust trying to relive his college age fantasies that likely never came to fruition, got a bit drunk, and made a complete ass of himself.

We are all flawed humans and, in and of itself, this incident isn't the biggest of "deals" (see today's news on Iraqi casualties http://www.cnn.com/2...), at one time or another most people screw up royally.  But it speaks to how hypocritical these crooks and liars are when they run on their "holier than thou" platforms of fraudulent religiosity.

Again, it's the cover up; stupid!

Linda Stender is, on the ouside, a woman of diminutive stature; but in the REAL world of heart, soul, and values she stands a million miles above her opponent in this race.

When the people of the Seventh Congressional District see Fersuson for what he truly is, and what he truly stands for; Linda Stender will be elected in a landslide; it shouldn't even be close.

Story has legs now (4.00 / 1)
Thanks to the Foley Follies.

Where's your family values now, Ferguson?

An appropriate and effective piece of direct mail. (4.00 / 1)
It won't backfire and it will close the gap further IMHO.
