Will the NJ GOP Attack Chairman Martinez for Amnesty and Social Security for Illegal Aliens?

by: JRB

Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 03:40:56 PM EST

Today, U.S. Senator Mel Martinez was named the new general chairman of the Republican National Committee. Like Senator Menendez, Senator Martinez is a Cuban-American.

And also like Senator Menendez, Senator Martinez voted to table this amendment:

S.Amdt. 3985  to S. 2611 (Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006)
To reduce document fraud, prevent identity theft, and preserve the integrity of the Social Security system, by ensuring that persons who receive an adjustment of status under this bill are not able to receive Social Security benefits as a result of unlawful activity.
If you've already forgotten, this vote spawned numerous attacks on Senator Menendez. My home received two mailers, funded by the NJ Republican State Committee, entirely devoted to that vote. And who can forget the ads?

So the question is, 'Will the NJ GOP attack Chairman Martinez for giving Amnesty and Social Security benefits to illegal aliens?'

A list of the other GOP Senators who voted to table the amendment after the jump.

I just called the NJGOP (0.00 / 0)
Of course, all the big guns were gone for the day, but the phone biatch didn't think they'd be launching any attacks on Mel Martinez soon.

Which just illustrates, quite starkly... (0.00 / 0)
Why Juney lost. Because even urban voters know the smell and output of a running manure spreader when they get close enough to one.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Oh, I think (0.00 / 0)
we'll see McCain attacked for it during the primaries.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

Abramoff raised 250k for Mel Martinez. (0.00 / 0)

Ney Admits to Lobbying Florida Senator
By Paul Kiel - September 15, 2006, 4:40 PM

It hasn't gotten much attention, but Bob Ney's guilty plea released today contained dirt on at least one other politician.

In the document, Ney fessed up to lobbying Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL), then a Bush cabinet official, on behalf of an Abramoff client. The official's department later acted favorably toward Abramoff's client, according to news accounts.

Ney admitted to arranging a January, 2003 meeting with Mel Martinez, then Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, to " the interests of Abramoff's Native American Indian Tribal clients."

(snip)

And he got plenty. According to The Miami Herald, Abramoff's client The Saginaw Chippewa, for whom Abramoff was working hard to win HUD money, was awarded about $4 million from 2002 to 2004.

Martinez was richly rewarded. Just two months after he left HUD in order to make a run for the Senate in early 2004, his campaign netted $250,000 from a fundraiser co-chaired by Abramoff.

What a guy.  He's the one who envisioned the Repugs scoring political points by forcing their will on the Schiavo family.  If that's any indication of his political instincts, I WANT to see him as Chairman.
