Blue Jerseyans, please sign this letter to support our progressive champion, Sen. Loretta Weinberg

by: Steven Goldstein, Garden State Equality chair

Blue Jersey community members, Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) needs us -- and right now, that means your signature on the letter below to Bergen County Democratic boss Joe Ferriero.

First, some background.

As you know, Loretta has been the tireless champion of every progressive cause we stand for:  Every substantive issue and also clean, reform-minded government.

As you may also know, the Bergen County Democratic machine, which doesn't represent much of what any of us stand for, has been de facto supporting its own candidate, Ken Zisa, to run against Loretta.  Zisa is an old-time Ferriero crony.

The buzz in the district is that Zisa is announcing in January.  One day he's said to be running against Loretta.  Another day he's said to be running against one of Loretta's Assembly running mates, Gordon Johnson and Valerie Vainieri Huttle, every bit as wonderful and progressive as Loretta is.

PLEASE SIGN THE LETTER BELOW BY E-MAILING ME, Steven, at Goldstein@GardenStateEquality.org.  As you'll see at the end of the letter, we ask Ferriero to meet us -- and should he say yes, a number of us will indeed go.

Loretta has stood up for us time and time again.  Now let's stand up for her.  Thanks so much, Steven (917) 449-8918

----------------

Dear Chairman Ferriero:

We progressive leaders from across New Jersey, active on dozens of issues of concern to our great state, express our impassioned support for the reelection of Senator Loretta Weinberg, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson and Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle in the 37th legislative district.

We write to you, Mr. Chairman, concerned that the Bergen County Democratic Organization is supporting a challenge to the reelection of any of these outstanding officials merely because of horse-trading and personal friendships between the BCDO and others who wish to run for public office.

Senator Weinberg, Assemblyman Johnson and Assemblywoman Huttle are among New Jersey's most honest, effective and progressive public officials.  In short, they represent everything the Democratic Party aspires to be.

Senator Weinberg, as you know, is beloved not only within her district, but also by millions more across New Jersey.  She has been a successful champion of equal rights, human rights and good government at every turn.  Over the past 14 years, she has accumulated a record of legislative achievement that could be a model for civics textbooks anywhere in America.

We not only stand with Senator Weinberg, we stand just as strongly with Assemblyman Johnson and Assemblywoman Huttle.  They share Senator Weinberg's commitment to progressive values - values that are our own.

Because of the leadership of Senator Weinberg, Assemblyman Johnson and Assemblywoman Huttle on a statewide scale, we progressive leaders - no matter where in New Jersey we may live or work - see much at stake in their reelection.  We are prepared to do everything we can to generate significant grassroots support on their behalf.

We would like meet with you, Mr. Chairman, at your earliest convenience.

This is an important one, not just in the interest of keeping a terrific legislator in the Senate, but as another step toward the de-bossification of NJ politics.

I guess I'll also point out that if a lot more of us ran for and won county committee seats, we wouldn't have to go asking the chairman to reconsider.  We could just vote his candidate down.  Or we could replace him with a chair that wouldn't pull stuff like this in the first place.

signed, but... (0.00 / 0)
...as much as I like and respect Steven and understand why he would approach the marriage equality fight as diplomatically and reasonably as he has to date, I don't know why he thinks that this approach is going to work with someone like Bossman Ferriero, who couldn't possibly care less about what the progressive community thinks.

Ferriero has declared war on Loretta Weinberg and by virtue of that, he has declared war on the progressive community.  The only way to fight someone like him is to fight him.  Someone has to tell him that if he and his cronies take on our friends in the 37th legislative district, our friends in the 36th and 38th will take on his cronies in those districts.

While the odds of winning a challenge like this in those districts are long, in a low turnout election year like 2007, Ferriero knows that anything is possible.  I believe that if we make it clear to him that if he decides to make the 37th a battleground between the establishment and progressives, we will take the battle to the entire county and will not quit until anti-Ferriero Democrats control Bergen County, he will back down and cut the strings off of his puppet, Ken Zisa.

Bergen County is a perfect example of how the Democratic establishment in New Jersey is a greater obstacle to progressive change than the Republican minority.  As despicable as someone like Steve Lonegan might be, he is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things because he has no power to implement his narrow-minded agenda while Democrats like Bossman Ferriero and Dick Codey do.

Done, for Joe and me (0.00 / 0)
We all need to stand up for Loretta--she is tops!

When do Bergen County Democrats elect their Democratic Committee members--odd numbered years or even numbered years?  In Union County we do it in 2007, but I think that in some other counties it's different.  Regardless, progressives should start lining up candidates now!
