Lobbyist w/ Burlco Bridge Commission pleads guilty

by: Jason Springer

Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 12:28:31 PM EST

Is this the 1st shoe to drop?
Robert Stears, a longtime spokesman and lobbyist for the Burlington County Bridge Commission, admitted Friday to billing the commission hundreds of thousands of dollars for work not performed.

Stears also admitted that he failed to pay income taxes on much of his ill-gotten gains, entering guilty pleas to a two-count federal charge of mail fraud and income tax evasion.

One can only wonder what will come next as there have been both federal and state criminal investigations into what amounted to no-bid, no-show, no-work contracts.

It has been alleged that the former GOP Chair Tom Wilson's firms received millions of dollars in contracts and Senator Martha Bark has been under investigation after being paid $330,000 for work that has not been documented.

Stay Tuned...

More on Stears (0.00 / 0)
Apparently, Stears worked as a lobbyist for 'The Strategy Group' and has done lots of work for the Republican Party.  From N.J. Insider:
"ROBERT STEARS former principal in ISSUES MANAGEMENT firm, former deputy executive director of Assembly Republican majority staff, also worked on state, federal campaigns for Republican National Committee, House Republican Caucus, Political Action Committee GOPAC, Republican Congressional Committee (liaison to House Republicans in Northeast during Reagan Administration)>"

The Strategy Group Issued a statement... (0.00 / 0)
The Strategy Group issued a statement following Stears' plea: "Our understanding of the proceedings held in federal court in Camden on December 1,  2006, is that Robert Stears admitted that he was solely responsible for the actions to which he plead guilty. Mr. Stears acknowledged that he brought the Burlington County Bridge Commission contract to the firm, was the point of contact for the contract, and was individually responsible for the preparation of the invoices in question."

"Mr. Stears' relationship with The Strategy Group was terminated more than four years ago and has resulted in litigation that remains unresolved. At that time Mr. Stears took the Burlington County Bridge Commission with him as his client."

"The current members of The Strategy Group do not condone, in any way, the actions of their former partner, who acknowledged responsibility for this wrongdoing."

At least Stears did one thing good... (0.00 / 0)
He was the former president of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights group in the Republican party ..
