News Roundup: Sunday December 31, 2006: Last one of the Year

by: Jason Springer

Sun Dec 31, 2006 at 10:51:38 AM EST

It's been a great year here at Blue Jersey.  We hope you have enjoyed our coverage and commentary and thank you for you support.  On to the day's news:

  • With his 83rd birthday approaching, the Star Ledger talks about Frank Lautenberg and how he plans to run once again.

  • Assemblyman John McKeon has proposed asking voters to again amend the state constitution to use sales taxes to preserveOpen Space.

  • The Trentonian says that while it was a good year for taxpayers in most states, it was a tough year for New Jersey taxpayers.

  • An AC Press editorial talks about Senator Gormely's idea to convert historic Boardwalk Hall to a mega casino and thinks it's an idea worth considering.

  • The Courier News has an interesting story on how as the amount of build able land shrinks, municipalities are limiting the size of new houses.

  • NJ Transit and Amtrak are arguing over who's responsible for making New Jersey travelers suffer through 157 hours of delays in two years.

  • The AC Press says that this year, the governor signed laws to allow civil unions for gay couples, provide millions for stem-cell research centers and approve the state's first pilot needle-exchange program, but that Property Taxes keep Corzine from success in his first year.  Do you agree?

  • The Bergen Record gives us their wish list for the New Year.  What are you hoping 2007 holds?

Have a good safe night tonight and we'll see you next year.  It's a big year in New Jersey  and we will need your help to keep making the changes we all desire.  Let me be the 1st to wish you a Happy New Year.

    nice piece about Lautenberg (0.00 / 0)
i had no idea he publicly called Dick Cheney a chickenhawk. and some of the quips from our senator in this article are priceless.

i like ol' frank just fine.  it's likely that with the fantastic health care afforded to Senators, he'll be alive forever which is fine with me.

    activist for hire.

    Chickenhawk (4.00 / 1)
Lautenberg used to roll out this picture on the Senate floor.

    Lautenberg's physical prowess (4.00 / 1)
Reading this article, I think Lautenberg could take me in a fight. I have reach on him, but he sounds pretty wily.

So that's it Frank, I'm calling you out. You and me. 3 rounds. Atlantic City. Winner gets the Secacus transit station named after him.

I HOPE THAT LAUTENBERG IS FACED WITH A DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY! (0.00 / 0)
I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS LACK OF A "BACKBONE" IN HIS (among other things):

    1. Interminable "struggle" to decide to "filibuster" Alito (and his picture with Alito
      on his website).

    2. Inability to join with Russ Feingold in "CENSURING" Bush!

    3. Vote with the majority of Republicans (and NOT DEMOCRATS), which resulted
in our loss of habeas corpus!

I would like to be able to have a chance to vote for another candidate for senator of NJ, one who is stronger, more articulate, younger, and more principled.  I think that we have several such candidates already, among our congressmen, and I hope that we are smart enough to take advantage of those choices.  Lautenberg is not strong enough, nor is he principled enough.  The voters of NJ deserve better!
