Poll: Kean Jr leads

by: Juan Melli

Wed Feb 08, 2006 at 02:07:09 PM EST

A Strategic Vision (R) poll out today has Tom Kean Jr leading Bob Menendez by 33%-27%. That's the end of the good news for Junior. A plurality (39%) still have not made up their minds.

Both candidates are largely unknown to the public at this point.

          Favorable Unfavorable Undecided
Menendez     23%        12%        65%
Kean Jr.     21%         8%        71%

The numbers will shift once they realize daddy isn't actually running again. It gets worse for Kean.

By a margin of 58%-30%, New Jerseyans say they do not want the US Surpreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. Kean Jr is pro-choice, but even pro-choice Republicans recently showed that when it comes time to approve Supreme Court justices, party comes before principles.

Only 37% of New Jerseyans approve of Bush's job performance (57% disapprove), and just 34% approve of his handling of the economy and Iraq.

Menendez voted against giving the President the authority to go to war in Iraq. Even with the hindsight of this disasterous distraction and the knowledge that it was based on lies, Kean Jr has said that had he been in the US Senate in 2002, he would have voted for war. Do we need any more proof that Junior just wants to be a rubberstamp for Bush? That's not what New Jersey wants.

I still think there's confusion about the Father & Son (0.00 / 0)
even with the 'Jr.' because some people aren't sure if the former governor was a 'Jr.' it happens some times.  More coverage of the fact that this is indeed the former governor's son will reduce the Kean results somewhat.

When it comes right down to it, in an election year that will feature a lot of partisan issues, in a state where 20% margin dissaproves of Bush, I have a hard time seeing this state vote to give Bush a Senator.

Uh-oh. (0.00 / 0)
If Junior can only open a 5 point lead on Menendez in a Strategic Visions poll, he's in trouble.

Kean, Menendez (0.00 / 0)
Well, I don't see Kean winning a statewide election against a sitting Democratic senator, especially with his rather conservative views and voting record (pro-pollution in one vote).  That said, one knows that the Republicans, instead of focusing on substantive issues, will try to connect Menendez with Hudson Co. pay to play politics, yet this should pan out a la Forrester's failed accusations towards Corzine.  I don't expect Kean to be a weak candidate, so we need to continue grassroots support, volunteerism and campaigning for Menendez.
