Jill Hazelbaker

She's baaack

by: Jason Springer

Thu Feb 19, 2009 at 02:30:00 PM EST

Blue Jersey favorite GOP staffer Jill Hazelbaker always seems to land on her feet.  Despite her unsuccessful astroturfing campaign for Tom Kean Jr., she ended up doing communications on the John McCain campaign.  We all know how that ended and now Hazelbaker has a new assignment:
Mayor Bloomberg has added yet another recognizable name to his ever-growing stable of campaign staffers: Jill Hazelbaker, who most recently served as the national communications director for John McCain's presidential campaign.

[snip]

In a statement released by Bloomberg's camp, McCain said Hazelbaker "brings a skill set that is valuable to any campaign" and called the mayor "fortunate to have her on board."
"I wish him and the campaign all the best," McCain added."

Prior to joining McCain's campaign, Hazelbaker was the communications director on Tom Kean Jr.'s US Senate bid in New Jersey.

Uh, about that skill set. I immediately thought to alert the Albany Project to be on the lookout for new users over the next few days that really like Mayor Bloomberg. Ironically, I found they're already prepared, exposing a NY Sock puppet just yesterday.

What Do These Two McCain Acolytes Have In Common?

by: huntsu

Mon Sep 29, 2008 at 04:23:30 PM EDT

ANSWER: Hopeful wins the prize for noting that these three high-level McCain/Palin staffers were all weened on the teat of the NJ Republican Party.

Come on, folks!  This is a contest, and the winner gets 500 Blue Jersey Points you can spend on extra diaries and comment ratings!   We'll even throw in a third McCain top staffer, Mike DuHaime, to make it easier.  What do these THREE yahoos have in common?

Yesterday and today the McCain camp was taking credit for getting the bailout passed, having delivered the House GOP votes needed to get the bill on to the Senate.  Needless to day, McCain obviously didn't do that because the bill failed.

Here are two spokespeople for John McCain, both very high level  advisers, claiming credit where it was not due for their man.  Besides being terrible wrong, can anyone tell us what they have in common?

But at almost the same time, McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt was saying on NBC?s ?Meet the Press?: ?What Sen. McCain was able to do ? was to help get all of the parties to the table. There had been announcements by Senate leaders saying that a deal had been reached earlier in the week. There were no votes for that deal.

?Sen. McCain knew time was short and he came back, he listened and he helped put together the framework of getting everybody to the table, which was necessary to produce a package to avoid a financial catastrophe for this country.?

On Monday morning, McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker said on Fox News that the deal would not have happened ?without Sen. McCain.?

?Sen. McCain interrupted his campaign, suspended his campaign activity to come back to Washington to get Republicans around a table,? Hazelbaker said. ?Without Sen. McCain, House Republicans would not have appointed a negotiator, which would not have moved this bill forward.

?It?s really Sen. McCain who got all parties around a table to hammer out a deal that hopefully is in the best interests of the American taxpayer.?

Hint -- it relates to our website!

Happy Birthday Blue Jersey

by: Jason Springer

Sun Sep 28, 2008 at 12:02:47 AM EDT

1172270909_Happy BirthdayOn September 28, 2005, the artist formerly known as Blue Jersey Founder Juan Melli brought together a group of bloggers and started BlueJersey.net, because the .com was taken at the time.  Here is his first substantive post on the blog for a look back.

Now three years later, we own .com and this is diary #9,158. We're over 1.15 million page views, 3 million visits, have over 2700 users and still have received 0 subpoenas.

This blog won the 2007 Lieutenant Laurel Hester Prize for Citizen Courage and the Commercial Closet Award through our work creating the Think Equal campaign.

We stream live each week with our Blue Jersey Radio show and have also seen our founder, state house reporter and initial intern launch their own successful careers after gaining recognition through their work here at home.

What has been your favorite moment?  For me, it was when we launched Jill Hazelbaker's career as an astroturfer.  To this day, her wikipedia entry has this in the third line:

Hazelbaker's name earlier came to public attention in connection with an accusation of astroturfing [2] at the time she was press secretary for Tom Kean Jr.'s 2006 campaign for the US Senate in New Jersey. Hazelbaker denied involvement in those activities.
Thank you to our readers for joining us on this wild ride and thanks to Juan for starting this long strange trip.

Blue Jersey Passed Over

by: Hopeful

Sun May 25, 2008 at 05:00:00 AM EDT

The Internet is playing an increasing role in political campaigns, and I like to think Blue Jersey is respected for our contribution.  Now, JohnMcCain.com has issued a new blog outreach program:

Select from the numerous web, blog and news sites listed here, go there, and make your opinions supporting John McCain known. Once you've commented on a post, video or news story, report the details of your comment by clicking the button below.

Yes, they're recruiting trolls and sock puppets. There's even a little graphic encouraging Republicans to promote McCain at Daily Kos, and a pull-down menu to suggest more web sites. But where is Blue Jersey on the list of "Suggested" Liberal Blogs? The answer is nowhere: We've been excluded and passed over.

No one at the McCain campaign claims responsibility for this outreach program, much less the selection procedure for the web sites included, but I would think -- based on her title and expertise -- that McCain's National Communication Director Jill Hazelbaker must be responsible.  So, I'd like to say that the mastermind behind AmadeusNJ, cleanupnj, and usedtobeblue should acknowledge that Blue Jersey helped inspire this program, and move immediately to include us in this blog outreach program.

I would appreciate it if any members of the traditional media could ask the McCain campaign about why we were passed over.

Hazelbaker Alert!!!: Jill Is Speaking the "Truth" Again... :Hazelbaker Alert!!!

by: Nick Lento

Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 06:35:41 PM EST

Our old friend, Jill Hazelbaker, http://www.bluejersey.com/show... (former spokesperson for Tom Kean Jr) is back in the news.  It seems that Mike Huckabee handily won the Kansas caucases today!

From todays NYT......
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02...

Asked if he saw any cost to staying in the race, Mr. Huckabee thought for a moment before answering: no.

?I have nothing else to do,? he said with a smile.

A likely story....the Huckster can't lose at this point; he's primed to be the VP or maybe even pull off some kind of "miracle".  Worst case scenario (for him) he emerges as the "go to guy" for the right wing fundamentalist evangelicals....who are the grass roots core of the Republican party.   He sure couldn't do much worse than Pat Robertson.

So, what does our old pal Hazelbaker have to say...

Mr. McCain?s campaign said the results on Saturday made little difference. ?Our campaign fully expected to fall short in the Kansas caucus,? said a spokeswoman, Jill Hazelbaker. ?John McCain is the presumptive nominee in this race and our path forward is unchanged by today?s results. Our focus remains the same: uniting the Republican Party to defeat Democrats in 2008.?

Sock Puppet Hazelbaker In As McCain's National Communications Director

by: Scott Shields

Mon Jul 16, 2007 at 01:06:52 PM EDT

(Following up on my Quick Hits piece, I wanted to provide a bit more insight and context.)

Need proof the McCain campaign's about to hit a brick wall? The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder's got it.

Jill Hazelbaker, currently McCain's New Hampshire communications director, is likely to take over as national communications director, a Republican briefed on the changes said. She's worked closely with McCain's new team, worked well with his old team, and has no dog in the fight but McCain.

You remember Jill Hazelbaker, right, Blue Jersey? Oh, I know you do.

Hazelbaker was caught here at Blue Jersey last year engaged in a variety of blogospheric no-no's. For one thing, she was engaged in an astroturfing campaign to make it seem as if there was a groundswell of Democratic disaffection with Senator Menendez's candidacy. To top it off, she did this by sockpuppeting, or creating a number of Blue Jersey accounts with which to post comments along the same theme.

And now, as the McCain campaign slips further into oblivion, Hazelbaker, who had been serving as his spokesperson in New Hampshire, is apparently being called up to replace outgoing Communications Director Brian Jones.  Jones, according to Ambinder and The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, is part of a mass wave of resignations of loyalists to former campaign manager Terry Nelson. Other press resignations include Jones' deputies Danny Diaz, Matt David, national press secretary Amanda Henneberg, Iowa spokesman Tim Miller and South Carolina spokesman Adam Temple.

Our congratulations to Jill for being sixth in line for a job that likely won't last the summer.

New Hampshire beware! Jill Hazelbaker is coming to a blog near you!
Jill Hazelbaker, battle tested in New Jersey this year as Tom Kean Jr.'s Communications Director, is headed to John McCain's presidential campaign. She will serve as Communications Director for McCain's campaign in New Hampshire.
Last September, Hazelbaker spent valuable work time posing as a Democrat on Blue Jersey -- from Junior's office!

Reporters on Kean Jr.'s Stances: "Confusing," "Less-than-clear"

by: Martin

Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 09:39:21 AM EST

For those of us who have attempted to glean a single definitive position on the Iraq War, stem cell funding, global warming, and other issues from Tom Kean Jr., we already know that Kean Jr. substitutes vague responses when asked for specifics, refuses to answer difficult questions from reporters, and attempts to placate the conservative and moderate branches of his supporters by giving them different responses at different times.

In these last few days of Kean Jr.’s losing campaign, however, reporters seem to be stepping up the pressure on him to state what he believes, not just restating whatever is popular (“Rumsfeld should step down,” his newfound revelation) and shifting according to the wind.  Fred Snowflack,Daily Record link writing for the Daily Record, had an editorial in the Sunday edition of that paper, asking both Menendez to reveal some points about his work with the North Hudson Community Action Corp. and Kean Jr. to expand upon his “less-than-clear stance” on the Iraq War.  Snowflack writes:

“We haven't heard from Kean, but Tuesday afternoon, the phone rang and Menendez was on the other end of the line.”
Menendez revealed how the Head Start funding works from a formula and how the poverty organization is still receiving that funding, hardly anything nefarious going on there.  But Kean Jr. was also called out in this editorial for having a hazy stance on an issue that directly affects New Jersey; once again, he refused to provide any clarity on his position of support for the Iraq War.

Meanwhile, the Star-Ledger article Star-Ledger Link that dropped the bombshell information that Kean Jr. is receiving support from radical right-wing organizations, Pat Robertson’s Christian Coalition and the National Right to Life group, also mentions that Kean’s position on gun control

“has caused confusion among people on both sides of the issue.”
Kean Jr., at a campaign stop in Newark,
““refused to answer a reporter’s questions about the matter”.
and has received support from the Christian Coalition because he supposedly doesn’t favor any further restrictions on gun control.

True to form, Kean Jr.’s spokeswoman, Jill “Astroturf” Hazelbacker, had to backpedal and attempt to create a consistent stance for the Republican despite his inconsistent responses:

“Kean’s record on gun control is clear... and in favor of tough gun control legislation.”
Strangely, Kean Jr. is giving different responses to this issue in both his answer to the Hall Institute’s virtual debate question on gun control, where he argues that “current firearm laws” are fine, thus agreeing with the Christian Coalition's position, which contradicts his previous stances on gun control. But Bryan Miller, who serves as executive director of Ceasefire New Jersey, a gun control group that has endorsed Menendez, says Kean Jr’s response
“sounds like it's out of the NRA playbook. The gun lobby's mantra is we don't need new laws, we just need to enforce the laws we have better."”

Is it little wonder that New Jersey reporters covering our senate campaign have found Kean Jr’s policy positions to be “confusing” and “less-than-clear”?

'Democrats for Kean' may actually vote for Menendez

by: Juan Melli

Wed Oct 04, 2006 at 08:59:20 PM EDT

That's the Associated Press's title, not mine. First there were internet "Hazelbaker Democrats" for Kean Jr, then the right-wing radio "Democrat" for Kean Jr, the non-Democrat & Republican candidate "Democrats" for Kean Jr and of course federal inmate Democrats for Tom Kean Jr. Angela Delli Santi at the AP writes about a "Democrats for Kean" event today in which both Democrats were misled about the purpose of the event, and neither one may actually support Kean Jr. (emphasis mine)
The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate appeared alongside two people identified as "Democrats for Kean" on Wednesday in an effort to show that he can attract voters of both parties. Trouble is, Tom Kean Jr. might not get the vote of either one.

The two Democrats who appeared with Kean thought the event was a chance to publicize their own beef over local corruption. Kean, however, staged the event to advance his own campaign.

Daisy Vega, a member of the parents' group Families United for Students of Elizabeth, said Wednesday she was a lifelong registered Democrat who has never voted Republican. She said she had not yet made up her mind whether to vote for Kean or his Democratic opponent, Sen. Robert Menendez, on Nov. 7, before adding, "I've never crossed over before."

The other "Democrat for Kean," former Elizabeth Councilman Bob Jaspan, said he, too, had not yet decided whom to vote for in the Senate race. He said he "was asked to attend and say a few words about my feelings on corruption. I did not know the label of the press conference."

Vega, 45, said she appeared with Kean after he responded to her invitation to support Elizabeth school children. She said the group, known by the acronym FUSE, invited Kean in the hope of triggering an investigation into the sale of two city properties to a private developer at a discount. The group believes the parcels should have been deeded to the Board of Education for construction of new schools.

She said she did not know the Kean campaign dubbed the event "Democrats for Kean" in its press release, but said she did not feel as if her group was being used. "Did it bring out the press? Good. What I had to say was heard," she said.

The entire campaign is one giant clumsily choreographed lie. What a bunch of clowns.

Monday Morning News Roundup and Open Thread

by: Jay Lassiter

Mon Oct 02, 2006 at 09:49:33 AM EDT

  • The New Jersey minimum wage went up by a dollar yesterday to $7.15/hour.  That rate is an two dollars higher than the federal rate of $5.15.  The new payraise means that a minimum wage worker in NJ grosses $14,300 for a forty hour work week.  If you ask me, this is hardly a living wage, but as retail worker Kobby Hayford noted yesterday, "More money is always good. I will feel it, definitely. It's going to help because everything costs more now."  He should know.  And Kobby Hayford is just the type of New Jerseyan Gov. Corzine is trying to help out with the increase.
However, it's worth noting that According to Carl Van Horn, who directs the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers, it would take a $12 hourly minimum wage to lift New Jersey's workers out of poverty.
    Ouch.

  • Herb Jackson debunks Tom Kean Junior's lies about being a centrist or "independent."  The Record
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. says bipartisan cooperation is the key to solving problems in Washington.  But Kean's record as a legislator shows he may not be the independent fighter he says he is. Not only does he serve in the Republican leadership in Trenton, a database analysis by The Record found that Kean voted the same way most of his GOP colleagues did at least 93 percent of the time.
Naturally Junior is whining that this isn't the whole story.  So I'll fill in the gaps:  not only is this guy not an independent, but he's also a scumbag.  Just look at the riffraf Junior has working on his campaign.  (Note to Jill Hazelbaker, this means you too!) For those of you keeping score, there is a detailed, itemized list of Junior's Rovian, radical, rightwing record in today's Record article.

  • Today's Trenton Times challenges the new Attrorney General Stuart Rabner to get tough on corruption in Trenton.  The article cites Wayne Bryant "a notorious grazer at the public trough" as the posterboy for all that's wrong in the state legislature.  No argument here.  It seems like Sen. Bryant punctuates every change of direction with (yet) another scandal.  I guess that's what happens to men like Bryant who have one hand on their pants and the other in the cookie jar at all times. If you ask me, Wayne Bryant would make a perfect addition for Tom Kean Junior's campaign team.

  • In other NJ news, Garden State farmers are hurting.
Tensions are at an all time high in Mercer County.
NJ Superior Court judge busted for driving tipsy.
Death toll in Iraq continues to rise.
  • Did I miss something?  What's on your mind today?

    No One Fired In Astroturf-gate?

    by: huntsu

Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 03:04:33 PM EDT

As any regular Blue Jersey reader knows, last week our uber-leader Juan Melli caught the Kean Jr. campaign's press secretary posting comments where she pretended to be a disenchanted Democrat.  It got a lot of coverage, but most folks considered it an isolated incident.

Not so!  Apparently in NH-2 the policy director for Rep. Charlie Bass (R) decided to do a little astroturfing of his own on liberal blogs, and he too got caught.

A lead staffer in U.S. Rep. Charlie Bass' office resigned Tuesday after admitting to posting fake messages on political blogs.

Tad Furtado, the No. 2 staffer in Bass' Washington office, resigned after it was revealed that he posed as a Democrat on liberal blogs. Bass said that Furtado posed as a supporter of Bass opponent Paul Hodes but then discussed how difficult it would be to beat Bass.

It's a movement!  The Republican Staffer Lying On The Internet movement!  Not, surely, as good as the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacree movement, but a pretty good one none-the-less.

The difference between the Bass campaign's response and the Kean Jr. campaign's response is the most telling, however.  Kean Jr. stood up on TV and defended press secretary Jill Hazelbaker, and did nothing to determine whether she or anyone else in his campaign was playing dirty pool with the Internet.

Bass fired his policy director, someone described as "one of his most trusted staffers":

"Tad Furtado posted to political Web sites from my office without my knowledge or authorization," Bass said in a written statement. "I have referred this matter to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct for their review."

Staff members in Bass' Concord office said they were shocked to hear Furtado was responsible for the postings. He was described as a rising young star and one of the congressman's most trusted staffers.

The fact is that someone on Kean Jr.'s staff -- or to be generous someone with access to the Kean Jr. computers in his office -- engaged in sock puppetry and lied on a public forum to support his campaign.  That's wrong.  Charlie Bass knows what to do, but Tom Kean Jr. is strangely confused about the right course of action.

When will Kean Jr. stand up and be the "reformer" he likes to play on TV?  When will he decide that political dirty tricks are wrong and to root out the wrongdoers in his campaign?

    I'm not holding my breath.

    Another "Democrat" for Kean Jr

    by: Juan Melli

Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 12:06:02 AM EDT

Tom Kean Jr's campaign is trying really hard to make us believe that Democrats support him. First they blogged under at least four names here pretending to be life-long Democrats and Blue Jersey readers concerned about Bob Menendez. Democrat for Kean and campaign spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker left an electronic trail, but that didn't stop them from denying the obvious truth once they were caught.

Now, they're taking their deception campaign mainstream - with a new 60 second radio spot featuring Larry Giancola - yet another "Democrat" that doesn't like Bob Menendez. Here's what Larry has to say:

My name is Larry Giancola. I'm a lifelong resident of Hudson County. I'm a registered Democrat. I would not want to see Bob Menendez representing New Jersey in the Senate.
At least this time, Kean Jr found a real life "Democrat" that doesn't like Menendez. But like Hazelbaker's fingerprints clumsily left behind all over the place, Larry also left behind quite a paper trail in the form of letters he wrote to The Record of Bergen County. Follow us below to meet the real Larry Giancola - the most self-hating "Democrat" in existence.

    Ferguson Dragged Into Astroturf-Gate

    by: blue7thpac

Sat Sep 23, 2006 at 09:30:51 AM EDT

    [Cross-posted from Dump Mike]

There's been a bit of silliness over at the Tom Kean Jr. campaign this past week.  Xpatriated Texan of Blue Jersey discovered that a Kean Jr. attack on Senator Bob Menendez was patently untrue by unearthing a Jersey Journal article from 1996.  Turns out that Menendez did get ethics committee approval for renting his property to a non-profit group he championed in Congress.  Turns out that Menendez even rented it to them at less than market rate, costing him money.

The Kean Jr. folks were not happy about the truth coming out.  To combat the evidence they started posting comments on Blue Jersey under made up names pretending to be former Democrats and liberals.  Juan Melli -- the founder of Blue Jersey -- caught them by matching the IP address of the commenters to the IP address of Kean Jr. press secreatary Jill Hazelbaker's e-mail account.

That's been a front page newspaper, TV and radio story for a few days.  Ooops.

But Hazelbaker wasn't done making mistakes.  She also tried to paint Ellen Weintraub -- the ethics officer named in the Jersey Journal article as the one who cleared the rental -- as a partisan nut whose word could not be trusted.  Unfortunately, Herb Jackson of the Bergen Record learned that in Weintraub's new job as a Federal Election Commissioner she had backed Kean Jr. in his complaint against Mike Ferguson based on cheating in the 2000 primary election for NJ7's Congressional seat.

    by: DBK

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 01:13:03 PM EDT

    To Jill Hazelbaker
    Junior Kean Campaign Spokesperson

    Dear Jill:

It's not easy being Kean, is it?  Or at least, not easy being a Kean spokesperson.  First you have to explain why your candidate left the Budget Committee in Trenton before a budget crisis and then complained about the way the budget crisis was handled.  Then the Vice President of the United States comes to New Jersey to raise money for your candidate and your guy hides in his car rather than be photographed with the VP.  Next the families of military personnel try to ask your guy questions about his support for the Iraq War and you have to figure out a way to explain his hiding from that, too.  And then, worst of all, you carefully manage a campaign to paint your opponent as ethically challenged and WHOOPS! some blogger spends an hour in the library and shows your whole campaign to be a pack of lies.

    What's a Republican to do?

    Poetic Justice

    by: Thurman Hart

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 12:10:35 PM EDT

Remember all the way back to yesterday when Tom Kean Jr and Jill Hazelbaker were busy announcing "Silly Season" (by the way, what kind of weapon do you use to hunt a silly?)?  Here is a reminder.  I know.  It's a long time ago.  Fortunately, "the tubes" have memory - like this golden oldie:
Hazelbaker denied posting the messages Thursday and said it wasn't worth checking to see if anyone else on the campaign did so.

"It's the silly season," she said. "I did not go around to everybody's computers and check them. Anyone who knows me knows that when I have something to say, I say it."

But then Crazymaker Hazelbaker puts her foot in her mouth until her knees knock her gums:

On Tuesday, Hazelbaker had sought to downplay a contention by Ellen Weintraub, former Democratic lawyer for the House ethics committee, that Menendez's lease did not violate House ethics rules.

In doing so, Hazelbaker directed a Record reporter to another political Web site, the National Center Blog, on which a writer suggested that Weintraub did not deserve her current job on the Federal Election Commission. The writer asserted that Weintraub had a conflict of interest because her husband was on the Senate Democratic staff.

    Uh, but:

what's also interesting is that a little more web research [instead of sniping at Blue Jersey] would have showed that Weintraub sided with Kean in his complaint over a brochure that attacked him in the 2000 campaign for the House that he lost to Rep. Mike Ferguson.
Ok, I fess up, I added the stuff in the brackets.  See how easy that is, Jill?  Just admit you did something and move on.

I don't know what's more embarrassing - that Junior lost to Mike "Where's My Fetus" Ferguson or that his press secretary just attacked the credibility of the FEC Commissioner that actually defended her candidate in the past.

But according to Jilly-girl, who is doing a heckuva job, you can't trust anything in blogs (maybe she reads Enlighten-NJ) and Weintraub, being a Democrat, couldn't possibly reach an ethical decision on anything.

One thing is for certain - the GOP better hope this goes away FAST!

Blue Jersey New Rules - Astroturf Edition

    by: PocketAces

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 09:07:28 AM EDT

(Blue Jersey's version of the popular Bill Maher feature. - promoted by Xpatriated Texan)

[Band starts the theme music.  Lights go down.  Announcer: "Please welcome our host, PocketAces!"  Curtain raises...and BAM!]

Welcome to the show ladies and gentlemen.  It's been a busy week here on BlueJersey.  I'd like to welcome Jill Hazelbaker to the audience.  I believe she's out there one, two, three, four times, so a big round of applause to all of her personas.  And I also see the guy with no fashion sense has joined us, so without further ado, let's get on with the show.

New Rule:  No more motherf'ing concern trolls on my motherf'ing blog! - At least snakes are proud of the fact that they crawl around on their bellies.  You don't see them gluing fake legs on their bodies and trying to pass themselves off as gila monsters, do you?  Keep it up and we're going to get Samuel L. Jackson on your ass.

New Rule: Do not wear sandals with a suit. - This is not so much a new rule as a rule that I felt needed to be explicitly stated.  Now, I know that this really should go without saying, but some of our new friends aren't nearly as fabulous as the BlueJersey crowd.

New Rule: If your costume needs a five paragraph essay to explain it, then it's probably not a good costume. - This is a corrollary to the previous rule.  It's approaching the Halloween season, so know that people are getting the urge to dress up, whether as Cher or the frat boy version of Bob Menendez, but if you need to hand out fliers to explain your costume, then it's time to rethink the costume.  It's like when you have to explain the punchline to a joke you heard while sipping brandy and smoking Cubans at the country club.

New Rule: You are no longer to simply say "Bob Menendez's ethical problems" - you must now enumerate them. - While I've heard both long-standing poster and new trolls lament the ethical woes of Bob Menendez, I've never actual heard what those ethical problems are.  So please, the next time you moan about Bob Menendez being our Senator instead of Democrat X because of ethical baggage, explain what that baggage consists of.  Then the rest of us can gladly explain how that's a Republican lie.

New Rule: The next time the Kean campaign wants to troll our little slice of internet heaven, please give us a call before coming over. - We need a little time to clean up the pad before company comes over.  You know, do the dishes, put out fresh towels, make the bed, and maybe bake a cake or cookies.  But we had over 12,000 new vistors yesterday and I wasn't even wearing a clean shirt!  Next time, give us a little notice - maybe we can set up some kind of potluck dinner or something.

    And finally...

New Rule: Jill Hazelbaker should resign from the Kean Campaign. - Not because of her (or her staff's) pathetic attempts to concern troll here at BlueJersey, but because of the lame lies she told the press in trying to cover up those actions.  Matt Miller is right, you're credibility is shot to pieces and no good reporter should ever believe another word that comes out of your mouth.  When you're trying to paint your opponent as ethically challenged, it's really tough to make that point when you yourself have no moral compass.  But don't worry, I bet you'd fit right in on the POTUS staff.

    Astrogate News Roundup

    by: Juan Melli

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 07:47:45 AM EDT

My school's paper, the Daily Princetonian: Grad student alleges blog posts are GOP dirty tricks

The Star Ledger: Kean defends aide accused of trashing Menendez on blog

Asbury Park Press: Kean aide denies posting notes

The Record: Kean says aide didn't blog against Menendez:

Hazelbaker denied posting the messages Thursday and said it wasn't worth checking to see if anyone else on the campaign did so.

"It's the silly season," she said. "I did not go around to everybody's computers and check them. Anyone who knows me knows that when I have something to say, I say it."

One message that Melli said linked Hazelbaker to the anonymous posts concerned Menendez's relationship with a non-profit group that leased office space from him and is now the subject of a federal investigation.

    An ironic twist

Later that evening "cleanupnj" posted the same information on bluejersey.net, a day before the article appeared in The Record.

    It's the Coverup, Stupid.

ABC 7 just ran the Astrogate story, and the AP and UPI are syndicating it, though they both have factual errors (strangely, both are about emails), which will hopefully be corrected soon.

    This shouldn't have been a 2-day story....

Update: The AP article was corrected. It used to say that I alleged that the Kean campaign emailed me comments, which I never did. I received the email sent by Hazelbaker from a third party, not from Jill or anyone else in the campaign. The UPI article still says I said the "e-mail messages attacking Menendez claimed to be from "an ardent Democrat" and were sent under two names registered within 15 minutes of each other." Obviously, they confused emails with comments on the blog. Jill may keep talking about her not having emailed me to try to confuse the issue, but it's completely irrelevant.
Update 2: 88.1 FM (NJ public radio) had the story around 6 pm tonight.
Update 3: UPI corrected their story.

    Karl Rove With a Keyboard

Press release from NJDSC Chairman Joe Cryan:
Cryan Calls on Kean Jr. To Investigate 'Swift Boat Internet Scandal'
Campaign of Lies & Dirty Tricks Acting Like 'Karl Rove With A Keyboard'

Trenton - Tom Kean Jr. should immediately investigate his own campaign for the dirty tricks and deceit of the Swift Boat Internet scandal, the chairman of the Democratic Party said on Thursday after Kean Jr's campaign was caught lying about fake Internet postings.

"Tom Kean Jr. has lied about everything from his support for George Bush to producing a Swift Boat film to smear Bob Menendez," said Joe Cryan, State Democratic Party Chairman. "Now his campaign has been caught with their fingers on the keyboard and, out of habit, they lie about it. Tom Kean Jr. should investigate his own campaign and come clean with the evidence."
